I was at both of those State Championships  and the first of course was miserabe as Beechwood got rolled but the weather was awful too. Coldest State title game I have ever been to. The next year was nice to get the revenge and beat Danville.

I have never seen a Beechwood team get dominated like that! It still blows my mind that Danville had 500 yards rushing in that game.

One thing the state needs to look at with RPI is the number of district games. Teams are getting penalized for having to play 4 (LCA) and 5 (Beechwood) district games, while majority of the state is o

One other comment I will add to the above post. I have seen Mayfield fans worried about only playing 9 games. That is not as big a concern as they might believe it to be. KHSAA RPI is not cumulative.

I don't put a lot of stock in the first RPi standings. There will certainly be movement. I don't pretend to know the way it all works (opponents opponents win %), but remaining on the top 4's schedule

Agree. It was a lot of fun for Beechwood getting the rematch in the next year's title game and beating Danville 23-7.

Those are the only two meetings between Danville and Beechwood in the last 25 years.

Some interesting matchups for RPI at the end of the year.

Green Co vs Taylor Co

Owensboro Catholic vs North Hardin

LCA vs Raceland

If Green Co beats a high RPI Taylor Co this can move them above LCA.

IF Owensboro Catholic handles NH they will keep the #1 seed, but if they lose how far down do they go?

LCA beats Raceland, but how bad do they have to beat them. Their schedule especially in the top end was one of the hardest in the state but their RPI is #4 in 2-A.

If Green County happened to beat Taylor County and that win ended up moving their RPI above LCA and if OCath, LCA, Mayfield and Green Co all advanced to the third round, then that would result in LCA traveling to OCath in the third round. What an unfortunate series of events that would be for OCath.

To my knowledge and I could be totally wrong about this, the score of games is not factored in to the RPI. A win is a win and a loss is a loss.

It would be bad for both Catholic and LCA.

LCA has played a much tougher schedule then Catholic. I’m an Owensboro fan and I think Catholic got way too much rating for beating Owensboro.

LCA has beaten BG, CAL (who beat 6-A RPI #1 Manual).

I guess I don’t understand the formula. I’ve seen it a 100 times but it looks like you schedule weak and you get credit then schedule tougher schedule.

At this point LCA knows they are probably traveling to Mayfield for a third round game so I don’t think traveling to OCath would be any worse for them. They’re gonna have to travel to play a top notch team in the third round either way even though they are, in my eyes, the best team in the state. On the other hand it has been looking like OCath would have to beat virtually no one on their road to state so if they end up having to host LCA in the third round that is a huge turn of events for them.

It’s all about scheduling 5A and 6A schools. In my opinion, the RPI is a very lazy and inaccurate rating system, especially for schools that play out of state teams.

That makes sense. Especially the bigger schools in Owensboro are way down. In the last 4 years they were beating Catholic. Times have changed and I’m sure Catholic will have a down year after this year, but they have a tremendous opportunity to get to state.

IMO, they should apply RPI to an 8 game schedule. That way, everyone can drop two of their lowest RPI games from the formula and keep it pretty consistent across the board.

@TimeWillTell @Astro Domino

Yes, margin of victory means nothing in KHSAA RPI.

The two big factors are the records of the teams you beat (and who those teams beat) and what class the teams you beat play in.

Big added points in beating teams in a higher class and their record means nothing. Beating 7-1 Male gets you the same class factor points as beating 0-8 Henry Clay. This is the biggest "hole" in KHSAA RPI in my opinion and is the factor that leads to inequity in determining the true strength of a team.

This year the KHSAA did remove some of the negativity of beating a team in a lower class by making the class factor of the first two lower class teams you beat equal your class factor. In 2A, that means LCA won't get dinged for beating Raceland, if they beat Raceland. Last year, playing 1A Raceland could actually be a negative in RPI because the RPI class factor is lower than 2A.

One final comment - you get zero points for a loss. You only get points for wins.

One other comment I will add to the above post. I have seen Mayfield fans worried about only playing 9 games. That is not as big a concern as they might believe it to be. KHSAA RPI is not cumulative. It is the total of the 3 weighted and averaged components to get to the final RPI. Mayfield doesn't "lose points" for playing 9 games because the points are all averaged. Mayfield is just averaging their numbers by 9 instead of 10. What they lose is an opportunity to improve RPI if they could beat another higher class team.

So Beechwood has 1 game left against a 2A #14.

LCA has 2 games left against a #12 2A and then a 1A.

Mayfield has 2 games left against #7 2A and very weak 6A team.

I'm assuming OC stays where they are with their lead, but assuming everyone wins their remaining games the top 4 would stay unchanged. Correct? I feel like mayfield could close some ground beating Murray and then the 6A CC. But may not be enough for top spot.

OC still has 6A North Hardin so it’s unlikely Mayfield will catch them.

If North Hardin has to surrender some wins.  OC might not get the push they need to stay number 1. Things just keep getting more interesting.
