2A RPI Rankings - 2023

Featured Replies

The thing that surprised me a bit was how little the numbers were changing. This late in the season the numbers are hard to change. The other thing to keep in mind is I left OOWP alone. Too many variables to attempt predictions. OOWP is 35% of the score but again, 9 weeks in what happens Friday to OOWP is 3.5% impact on the numbers.

Looking at it another way, 90% of the KHSAA RPI results are done. My guess above about this Friday's WP  and OWP adds in another pretty reliable 6.5%. I think it is highly likely the rankings stay as is.

One thing the state needs to look at with RPI is the number of district games. Teams are getting penalized for having to play 4 (LCA) and 5 (Beechwood) district games, while majority of the state is o

One other comment I will add to the above post. I have seen Mayfield fans worried about only playing 9 games. That is not as big a concern as they might believe it to be. KHSAA RPI is not cumulative.

I don't put a lot of stock in the first RPi standings. There will certainly be movement. I don't pretend to know the way it all works (opponents opponents win %), but remaining on the top 4's schedule

Ehhh I’m not so sure. I’d rather play anyone in 2A 3rd round than face that offense. The defense doesn’t worry me as much I believe we will be able to score. The offense is scary though. Last year I thought we did a great job containing him his weapons were solid but not great. Obviously we all know what they added no need to get into that . We just won’t be able to focus on the air attack so much like we did last year and I’m afraid it will hurt us. BUT we will be home and I’ll always take my Cardinals at home in November.

For good reason, War memorial isn’t an easy place to play in November, the Dragons have first hand knowledge of that from just two years ago when Mayfield smacked us all around the field.

I’m not blind to the fact the Mayfield and OC are more than likely 3-4 touchdown favorites against my Dragons.  I also know we have a big up hill battle with either, and that’s even assuming we make it to round three, the way we have played the last two weeks, I’m not certain of that happening, the last two weeks haven’t been our best football to say the least.

I wish y’all the best of luck. I always root for the teams that have diehard humble fans on here.

I'm from Owensboro, I would rather play Catholic then Mayfield because Mayfield can run and pass well. More so run then pass. Catholic is more one dimensional but can run the ball with their QB.

If Catholic beats North Hardin they would most likely play:
Caldwell county
Crittenden County
Green County
Somerset
LCA for the state championship

if Catholic loses to North Hardin they would see LCA in the 3rd round

just a prediction I could be wrong but this is just what I have looked into

I guess I'm confused on the whole RPI playoff deal.  How would Mayfield play LCA in the 3rd round being the #2 and LCA the #4?  Does it not go back to a traditional style bracket with the RPI rankings? IE...The #1 seed plays the lowest seed still in it the the #2 seed plays the next to lowest seed still available and so on?  In my mind the top 4 seeds shouldn't see each other until the semis if they all win.

My guess is Cardinal4Life06 thinks Mayfield would jump over Owensboro Catholic if O Cath loses to North Hardin, so Mayfield would then be the #1 seed.

That still shouldn't equal to a 3rd round matchup.

In the round of 8, the state is split into east and west with 4 teams on each side. OCath, Mayfield and LCA are all “west” teams so therefore OCath being the top seed would play the worst team left in the west and Mayfield and LCA would matchup.

Ok I guess that's where I was confused.  I thought the East/West thing was out the window with RPI.  I thought it was strictly RPI based starting in the 3rd rd.

I think it should be strictly RPI in the third round. A couple teams might have long road trips but you have a better chance of seeing the two best teams matchup in the state championship instead of seeing Mayfield and LCA in the third round and in 4A you will probably see Boyle and Corbin face off in the third round.

I’m confused also. Usually, the third round is the regional championship. I don’t know how Mayfield playing LCA or BW in the third round qualifies for a regional championship matchup.

Since RPI came into play a few years ago it is no longer technically a regional championship.

I am assuming "BW' = Beechwood. If so ...the earliest one of those teams could see Beechwood is in the Semi-Finals. They are on the other side of the bracket.

An east team will not see the west til the semifinals.
