The 2023 season opens up for Bullitt East against the Woodford County Yellow Jackets at Mercer County in the Little Caesers Fort Harrod Bowl.  The Chargers had a dream run last year, culminating in a 14-1 record and 6A state championship.  Led by Mr. Football, Travis Egan, the Chargers amassed over 6000 yards of offense last year.  Fast forward to this year and the Chargers only return 6% of that 6000 yard production.  The offense must replace 9 starters, including all 6 skill positions on offense.  The Chargers will be led by Jack Zwernemann at QB on offense.  The Chargers will have to rely heavily on their defense for at least the first half of the year, which luckily for the Chargers, they do return 8 of their top 11 tacklers last season.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off back-to-back 10 win seasons, including an 11-2 record last year.  They do return QB Andrew Nason and playmaker Makhi Smith on offense.  Junion Leland Taylor looks to play a key role in their offense this year as well.  On the defensive side of the ball, Woodford County lost 6 of their top 8 tacklers, but do return leading tackler LB Dayvion Sturgis who looks to have an even bigger year this year.

Chuck Smith is a gift to Kentucky high school football.  Did you know that if Chuck looks in a mirror, the mirror cracks under pressure? Because not even glass has the nerve to get between Chuck

Woodford really passed the look test last year. I will pick them. However I  think a good game plan goes along way vs. Woodford.

Not sure what to expect early in the season from the Chargers after the first two scrimmages.  They’ve had moments where they’ve looked really good & definitely look like a top 10 6A team & they’ve had moments that have left me scratching my head in disbelief.  I think they’ll be pretty tough the back half of the year, but a Dr Jeckyl & Mr Hyde situation early on.  If they can take care of the ball on offense & play solid on special teams, I think they win this game.

Since it’s a Saturday game, I’m thinking about making the 45 minute trip to Alvis Johnson Field and checking this game out. I know Woodford picked up a nice athlete/RB this week from a transfer as well.

How did Woodford look against LCA yesterday?

Do tell?

The Chargers have work to do.  They have a lot of inexperience on the offensive side of the ball.  But they have some big effort guys also.  Just need reps and work.  I think the defense is stiff enough to give the O a good shot this week.

I'll take the Chargers by 10.

A senior transfer out of Lafayette named DJ Dumas. 6’2” probably 220ish with excellent speed. He can play RB, LB, DE. Word is he’ll play RB at Woodford. Unfortunately he was never really able to show off his abilities at Lafayette but he could be a really special player with good players around him. He also has a younger brother (junior) that’s transferred to Woodford that has lineman size and is a great athlete. You never know how these transfers will play out but they could be really good additions for Woodford. Definitely keep an eye out for them!

It was a scrimmage so hard to tell. For the most part it was pretty vanilla. Looked like both teams didn't want to show a lot on film. The RB's backs for Woodford did look pretty solid. The passing game not so much.

Great to see Dennis Johnson having a great run. Hope the Jackets stay healthy and continue to do Big things.
