Correct me if I’m wrong, but his first year with Dayton was just this last season, wasn’t it? They were district runner ups and won a home playoff game. I know he was at Bellevue the last 6 years before he went to Dayton.

One thing we all need to also consider, Pence has coached for several years under Randy Borchers. Borchers is the brother of current Ludlow superintendent Mike Borchers.

Another thing with Pence we need to consider is that while it’s been at the Freshman level, he’s been a head coach. He has established team rules, he’s led fundraising, he’s handled equipment changes, he’s budgeted. He’s done the little things/background things that may give him a one up on someone without coaching experience.

If one year at Dayton and 6 at Bellevue, that adds up to 7 years. You said 9 in the other post. Where are the other 2 years?

McMillen was at the helm when the Bellevue program really went to shambles. Participation dropped off considerably, and I would expect the same at Ludlow if he got the job. Most kids down there don’t respect the guy at all.

I could be wrong, but I thought he coached at Dayton with Chad Montgomery as well.

I’ve never seen a Freshman coach run independent of the Varsity team when fundraising or budgeting.  It’s the program of the varsity HC in those regards. 
I’m sure he does some behind the scenes work but most every coach has some roles or responsibilities.

Actually been around the town/school forever, including Woody. And around the guys age so I’ve seen many interactions first hand throughout the years. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the route they go if numbers don’t fall off exactly like they did at Bellevue.

Bellevues issues with numbers are not due to one coach. In 15 years they have 8 head coaches. Add in the fact that you have BB and NCC in the county playing at a higher level consistently and having no district restrictions, there's a lot more to what's happened at Bellevue than one coach. A coach is only as good as the staff he surrounds himself with. There's already a young excited staff in place at Ludlow, that has been running weights and conditioning since January. The numbers are the biggest they have ever been and the facilities are going to be one of the best in the area. Regardless of who is at the helm to the kids will show up to play. Not to mention there's nearly 40 kids in the MS program. Why would they want to mess up any momentum with an outsider? 

Did Ludlow have a spring ball this year? With the odd timing of Taphouse "stepping down", I am curious if Ludlow's assistants continued or started spring practice? 

Does Ludlow even have the numbers to participate in spring ball or are there too many kids in other sports. 

Continue to be a tall task for whomever takes over the program, as they will be significantly behind the 8 ball, but if they want to do it right, must be willing to sacrifice "success" in this first season to build the type of culture they want to bring to LHS.

They'll be fine. Spring ball isn't that big of a deal- it's really not.

Eh, in the grand scheme of things, it is not too big of a deal, but for a new coach to come in and have to change things up, it is tough for kids to "rid" their old ways.

The new coach will have to work quickly and hope the kids at Ludlow buy in quickly.

It is and it always has been a tad overrated. It's great to get outside, change things up from the off season, but it's nothing that can't be done in June (outside of full gear). You can change up the culture with offseason workouts and start there. 8-10 practices in March, April, May and more times than not, without you better players due to baseball or track, come August, September, October and beyond holds zero relevance.  

I'm a fan of it. I think its good for nothing else than to break up the offseason, but to truly believe it plays any factor whatsoever in an upcoming season? Can agree to disagree, though on the big picture impact of it! ?

The bold also takes time. I heard once from a HOF HS football coach out of state (I'm talking one of THE states when it comes to HS Football) that when you're a new hire? It usually takes TWO full offseason and TWO full season's before your new team is YOURS.
