Love the Red Colonel Graphic. Bold!

There was a lot of bad in 2022 for Pat Burkes first year at the helm for the red Colonels last year. The inability of their offense in most games to generate anything resulted in their defense being on the field… a lot. Discipline issues were evident with some of their best players fighting each other on the sidelines during games, and costly penalties at the worst possible moments in games. Most of us chocked it up to a whole new staff, new systems on both sides of the ball, and being a younger team. They showed flashes, but the schedule they played was brutal, having had to play most of NKY ‘s best in back to back to back weeks.

Via social media it looks like they have added to their defensive staff which was a need. Brought up a Turkeyfoot coach who was with the 8th grade runner ups, and Coach Mobley from Hughes HS (Cincinnati) will be a good addition. You’d think after a season like that kids would be flocking to Beechwood and CovCath, but all indications are the numbers are still good… right now. Most of their best athletes are back this season. Senior Trey Barnett, and Junior Armani Gregg on offense, and Seniors Brach Rice, Beni Mwamba and Miguel Rodriguez are three D1 prospects on defense.

Good news, they moved to down to 5A. Bad news, it’s in a district with Highlands. Still a rough schedule but the way it is set up is a bit more favorable than last year. I say 4-5 wins are possible here. My opinion is Highlands comes out of this district in first and Dixie/Cooper fight it out for second.

What TF8 coach was elevated to the varsity staff?

Thanks for all of that.

If Dixie can get their offense going on a consistent basis they will be a dangerous team.

All my son tells me is that it was not the head TF coach. Possibly a coordinator? I do know a couple of those coaches have freshman at Dixie for next year. This is good news, I'm going in to my fourth year as a Dixie FB parent and in that timeframe there has not been a dedicated Frosh coach.

I see the team is working out at Nevels now, which will definitely help.

Armani is working hard to develop into a QB as he was more of an athlete playing QB last year IMO.

Line play will be the key for next year as they have some young athletes coming back. Junior to be Anderson showed some flashes at RB and the return game last year.  Senior to be Rice, you know what you're getting there.  Junior to be Barnette has the potential to be a top WR in NKY these next couple years.  The physical tools are there. Senior to be Kohls is one of the top kickers when healthy.

If I'm not mistaken, the coaching staff was a little thin last year, so picking up additional coaches that fit Burke's philosophies will definitely help.  I haven't heard what TF coach moved up, but I know all the players at TF loved all the coaches.  The staff Sekowski has put together at TF is great.  They've had some of their highest numbers recently.

Burke and his staff are also invested in the youth organization, which is something Dixie has really lacked.  The benefit of this won't be seen for a few more years, but it's something to keep an eye out for.

I remember my buddy saying “if they could put the locker room smell into a cologne, I’d buy a case of it”. I agree, can still smell it.

I like Dixie in 5A. I think they win the district this season with an 8-2, 7-3 record.

If Dixie slowed down just a hair on offense it would help them a lot. Last year it felt like they were more focused on snapping the ball as fast as possible over getting results. So many mistakes made forcing tempo. I agree that offensive style could cause problems for defenses but the way they ran it last year caused more problems for themselves than defenses.

Right, it has to be some combination of the coach slowing it down and the players speeding it up.  But to your point, it was overboard last year.

Wins:  Hughes, Boone, Scott

Toss-Up: Conner

Rest of the schedule looking a little "rough" for the Red Colonels.
