He was fine being racist.  They were going to let that slide.

The question I have is who did he upset to have this info leaked?   It came from the investigation of the Washington Football Team but we all know that his emails aren’t the only ones like this.  He isn’t a unicorn.  I want to see what the other 650,000 emails say.  Will we find out what those emails said as well?

Also, knowing what we know now how long has the NFL sat on these emails?  We know they knew what he said in there.

My thoughts:

How long they sat on them is irrelevant. The Gruden stuff represents a fraction of a percent of what they were going through, but what the NYT obtained is all that slipped through the cracks. For the NFL's sake, they are crossing their fingers this is a singular enemy of Gruden and not a mole looking to release more information, because who knows what else is in the report. All we know is it resulted in a $10MM fine. Groups are calling for the release of all documents... That would be juicy. On balance, there might (high probability) be some harmful information come about sexual assault victims, so in that sense I don't want any more information released if it is damaging to them.

My opinion? The NFL will do any and everything they can do ($$$) to prevent everything being released. They know what's in there.

Of course they do. It's their investigation.

Think of it like this. If they issued a $10MM fine, it probably should have been $100MM. The damning emails/information is in the sexual harassment stuff, imo. Gruden and media narrative of "the NFL is misogynistic and racist" is a red herring.

Which is why how long they sat on them is relevant to me.  I think they were the ones who leaked them to the NYT. How long did the Raiders know about the emails?  Gruden is a red herring for sure.  I just wonder about how long they were known about before action happened.

I suspect several months, but maybe not as long you think. If anyone has ever been involved with a workplace investigation, the protocol wouldn't be to filter through evidence and as something else comes up, you pivot and go to the boss. The findings were probably presented to the Commissioner late spring and as part of that they brought to him the Gruden stuff. He reaches out to the Raiders to make them aware and then they pray it never comes out.

That makes them all complicit.

I’m all for Gruden being let go. He said some stuff he shouldn’t have said. That’s enough evidence for me.

I do find it ironic that the NFL has decided to give Dr. Dre, Eminem and Snoop Dogg the honor of preforming at halftime of the Superbowl this year. I’m sure if we comb through their lyrics, we can find much worse than what Gruden said…

The NFL excels at say one thing, do something different.   Case in point:

Player safety is of the utmost importance.   But in 2018, they flexed a Chicago vs Minnesota game in to SNF, then the Bears played the following Thursday (Thanksgiving) in Detroit.   They played 3 divisional games in 12 days.   So player safety was uber important, for every team except the Chicago Bears.

Wow!!!

Is he done completely now? No coaching, commentating or pre-draft specials?

Perhaps he could join Chatterbox Sports where Thom Brennaman is doing play by play and do analysis of high school football games.

Unless someone else slurred Commissioner Goodell ... then I am sure that person's emails will be leaked very soon also.

Call me shocked.   I'm sure the hard drive or cloud server housing the emails is sitting in the same incinerator that once burned the spygate tapes.

It's a stretch to think that Gruden's conversations fell on completely deaf ears.

I hope they don't.    I just no longer trust the NFL on anything they make public.   It's become about protecting the league, not what is right.

Did they say something derogatory about Goodell?
