To some extent yes. Without going into to much detail, I think it all boils down to being locked into specific offensive and defensivne schemes evey year regardless of the differences in talent and ability of a given team. For example, the defense CCH runs just does not even come close to maximizing the talent/skills of this years team. My opinion is that a great coach will change the scheme of his offense or defense based on the talent of each team he has, Eddie, however will run the same thing regardless every year and expect the kids to fit into it.

  • It is kind of funny hearing Cov Cath fans complain about the legitimacy of an opposing team's roster and personnel.

  • I saw it live and I saw the tape. There were several drives kept alive by BW because of some obvious holds by the BW OLine that were not called right in front of the White Hat.  Really don’t understan

A lot of really good posts here. I don't think the sky is falling, but a couple thoughts on my end:

1. I think the talent is certainly down at the skill positions compared to 16-19, with the line play being equal to slightly better. Having said that, I really like some of our receivers, but haven't been able to take advantage of it. I think Agee and Zion are very good high school players. Benke being out is frustrating since I think he's capable of being an awesome player with his size and movement skills. Wilson, Sullivan and Rodriguez at TE will all be college players at some level.  Zion and Benke are back next year and a freshman receiver, Oliver Link, looks like he's going to be a big time player for us. Unfortunately though, when the best athlete in the class quits the team in 2 out of 3 classes (Stava and Dieruf) that's going to have a major negative impact at the skill positions. That can't keep happening.

2. To be blunt, we haven't gotten the production needed from the QB and RB position the last 2 years to truly compete. That's not to say those guys are bad players, but as an example, most KY offenses would love to have Reid Hummel on their team. However, if he's your #1 back, you're likely going to struggle against teams you need to beat to go deep into the playoffs. If he's getting 10 touches a game on screens, routes out of the backfield to get him on linebackers, jet sweeps, outside runs, etc, he's going to be a very productive player for you. If you're having to rely on him as your lead back, and run single back power and iso and ask him to lead block on QB runs, that's not his game. Unfortunately, we haven't seen another back step up and be the lead guy to have Reid slot in as a very good #2 that he should be.

3. I thought Caleb struggled last year because his game isn't built to have the offense run through him, but we had to do it since our backs weren't good enough. For example, if he is in a run first offense where he can go off play action and push the ball vertically down the field with his big arm, that's where he's at his best. When you're asking him to get a bunch of completions in a row to move the ball and then have him be your main runner, that's not his game. He wasn't consistent enough in his mechanics or his reads to play on time to move the ball like that. This year, Holtz just isn't a QB. We've tried it, but I don't see it and I don't think he has any confidence either. The most frustrating thing to me is he hasn't even been much of a threat running either with how athletic he is. He's way more athletic than Caleb, but hasn't been close to as effective as a runner. It's too bad because I think our defense is very good at full strength when we aren't playing an elite high school player like Hergott.

4.  My opinion is that we are really well coached and think we've adjusted to our talent. We are fundamentally sound and I like the schemes that we run. It's a watered down version of a college offense, which is ideal if you're playing guys both ways. You don't want them thinking too much and just get your best guys out there. I also think we gameplan well with called shots. There have been some comments about going more 2 TE sets and running the ball, in a vacuum, yes, I agree. However, when Wilson and Sullivan are playing every snap on defense, that's really tough to do for them on offense most of the game.  Rodriguez at TE, while very athletic and has a fantastic frame, is a year in the weight room away from being able to push guys around in the run game and we don't have the QB play now to take advantage of his ability as a receiver.

I see lots of talented kids who are in Covington Catholics feeder programs choosing other schools for High School.   Maybe people are finally getting tired of their kids not being able to play multiple sports at Covington Catholic.  One of the best athletes in the school was discouraged from playing 2 sports.  Other schools have and will continue to benefit from this. Athletes shouldn't have to pick and they most certainly shouldn't have it "hanging over their heads" if they decide to play multiple sports.  From what I've heard and witnessed the Coaches at CC do not work together.

In your experience do the CCH football coaches discourage kids from playing multiple sports?

Since the first year he arrived at CCH. Had multiple kids play for him. How bout you?

They encourage multiple sports until it conflicts with football, even early summer workouts. Which is a big conflict for kids who play competitive summer baseball or basketball.

Different perspective, same take. CovCath youth football has also grown so big, that a lot players don’t see the field. If you don’t see the field in middle school, you’re gonna look elsewhere for HS. Just a numbers game. case in point, WKU commit Beechwood RT Luke Slusher. Couldn’t get on the field in CYF. Anyways, that scenario is not the end all be all example, but add it to the multi-sport discouragement and other theories and you have floating around and you got potential problems.

If you've been paying attention, Eddie runs the same 3- 4 defense with the DE's playing more like DT's than DE's. This defends depends on having outstanding linebackers, which I think Sullivan and Jones are, but it also requires them to cover sideline to sideline, which, they are not quick enough to do. That isn't a knock on them at all, but is a demonstration of changing up your scheme to fit the players you have on the field. The defense worked great when you have Mayer and Felix at LB for two year, the players now have different strengths but are expected to fit into the same scheme.

This is flat out not true. Eddie works well with all kids and all sports. All he asks is that they communicate with him and give a schedule in advance.

It is not until after dead period until Coach tells them they have to focus on just football, and even then has been understanding on a tournament or two. The problem at CovCath and kids playing multiple sports is not a football problem, and not a baseball problem.

Colonel Youth Football has grown at an astronomical rate. This may have been a problem in years past, and that's unfortunate if players didn't get to see enough playing time, but they currently have eight teams spanning grades 3-8 and competing in two separate leagues in order to meet the participation level in the CFY program.

I think I am becoming a Beechwood fan. Their case for support seems strong. What is our mascot?
