This past Friday might be the biggest crowd I have ever seen at Beechwood.

I don’t know if this is true but someone told me at the game that Beechwood is thinking about adding more stands past the visitors side of the stands.

About 4 plays later Cov Cath had the ball 1st and 10 on the 22 yard line with about 5:20 to go and threw a pass intended for Agee in the end zone and the ball landed about 5 yards out the back of the end zone.

Beechwood's secondary is extremely strong (and looks to stay strong for several years coming). I could be wrong, but I don't believe they lost a single defensive back from last season, and last season they held Caleb Jacob to 108 yards passing. That's about 75 yards under Caleb's career average for single game passing. Add to that the fact that our starting QB was intercepted 6 times in the first 3 games this season, and I would have to think it would give any decent coach some serious pause when considering taking deep shots against a talented defensive backfield.

I think poor QB play in this and last years CCH vs Beechwood games had more to do with CCH’s issues. Tigers db’s are quick and aggressive but very undersized. A team with a good Qb and some 6 foot plus receivers/ TE’s should be able to take advantage. Eddie didn’t have enough faith in passing game to even try last week.

Coach Eviston has three quarterbacks. Holtz is athletic and can run decently. He has arm strength and can put a good ball up, but his accuracy isn't great beyond 10 or 15 yards. When he's throwing on the move, that accuracy decreases further. Agee is also an athletic quarterback and is extremely fast for a QB. We haven't seen much of Agee's arm, but we do know he can run well, and we also know that when he was removed from the defense so he could stay in at quarterback during the 4th quarter of the Lex Cath game, Lex Cath suddenly rolled up 12 plays good for 170 yards and 3 touchdowns with less than 6 minutes off the clock to win the game. Agee is a very important part of Cov Cath's defensive backfield. Pitzer is a sophomore quarterback and has a great arm, but he's also tall, lanky, doesn't run the ball particularly well at this stage of the game, and not so great under pressure. They're working him out plenty on JV.

Eddie started getting raked over the coals last year when some people alleged Jacob's passing game "sloughed off" when he went from averaging 188 yards passing per game in the previous two seasons to 163 yards passing per game. (I wouldn't call that "sloughing off" but hey, that's just me.) How's it going to go over with those same folks when Eddie starts back with a sophomore QB who doesn't have one of the best tight ends in the history of Kentucky high school football to just flip the ball to for a 15 yard gain? Or do we move Agee to full-time starter and end up watching teams pass on us all night long?

Sure, a lot of those were screen passes, but we've already established that when Holtz is trying to run and gun or is stuck trying to throw deep off his heels, we don't end up with receptions, and even worse, we've ended up with too many interceptions. That didn't stop Eddie from trying to throw over the middle a few times...unsuccessfully. And trying to go deep a few times...unsuccessfully. Our top 4 receivers are Lenihan (under 6'), Agee (6'2"), Hummel (under 6') and Mason (under 6'). Trevor Wilson (6'4") has had 3 receptions but also has had some key drops, including one in our opening drive against Beechwood, as well as several times this season where Wilson's release off his block to move into passing position has ended up with Holtz under pressure too quickly. The couple of times we went for Agee this past week, the ball was not on target. That happens with high school quarterbacks. Yes, it's frustrating, but it happens. Benke (6'2") is our top returning receiver from last season, but he's only been in 2 games, so who knowns what's going on with him.

One thing I think a LOT of Cov Cath fans are neglectful to acknowledge is that we just don't have the talent pool right now that we had for the last 4 or 5 seasons. Right now we have twelve players on college football teams. Twelve. That's happened exactly never in the history of our football program...five, mayyyyybe 6 or even 7 on college teams in the past, and that might have been only once before. Twelve, though, is just unprecedented. We had an unprecedented talent pool between 2015 and 2020, and now a lot of folks (I think especially those folks whose sons currently attending Cov Cath are the first generation of their family to attend the school) seem to be bent out of shape because the program isn't where it has been the last few years.

Take a deep breath, folks. Things are going to improve. Eddie is one of the absolute best football coaches in the state, as is his staff. Calm your jets.

First time looking at this since the loss. Huge props to Beechwood. I know it was their 1st win against us in 7 years, and and 1st at home in 13 years They earned it and were the better team not just on Friday, but most Friday's. My son said they simply outplayed us.

I don’t think he or the staff is as great as most think to be honest. Not saying he’s bad by any stretch, but best in the state? No way.  And it is showing this year, not just because of losing, but because of getting out coached in several games. He refuses to make adjustments, team has been sloppy with tons of mistakes and penalties most weeks, and not to mention the quitting on the kids in the 4th quarter last week. We have two TE over 6’2” and have targeted them maybe 10 times combined all year, yet keep running bubble screens 10 times per game and get very little out of it. Opposing D’s know what we’re doing. We’ve got the players to throw the ball to, we just don’t call the plays to get it to them or when we rarely do, the balls are off target. 
 

Maybe the unprecedented talent from the last 5 years skewed the thinking on how great of a coach he is?

Coaches need talent. CCH just isn't where they have been on the talent side of things. They have very good players who have talent but every team from 2016-2019 had special players - players who are just elite. Belry is 0-5 right now. Do you think Phillip Haywood doesn't know how to coach football? In 2013, Beechwood was 8-5 and lost in round 3 of the playoffs. I don't think Coach Rash was less of a coach that year.

Beechwood wears teams down. Very unusual depth for a small school. They are rotating players a lot to keep them fresh. There are 17 different players being rotated in on defense. On the defensive line they have a 6 man rotation, can go smaller and quick or go big. Against CCH, they didn't use the big guys till the second half. They let CCH's o-line chase around the smaller speed guys for a half then Coach Rash brought in the beef in the second half to stop the CCH running game.

Not only are there 12, but most are on "bigger" than average programs. Contributing to those programs too. The talent run they had was insane.

To some extent yes. Without going into to much detail, I think it all boils down to being locked into specific offensive and defensivne schemes evey year regardless of the differences in talent and ability of a given team. For example, the defense CCH runs just does not even come close to maximizing the talent/skills of this years team. My opinion is that a great coach will change the scheme of his offense or defense based on the talent of each team he has, Eddie, however will run the same thing regardless every year and expect the kids to fit into it.
