Another deep class. So many teams with a shot.  Cov Cath and BG lost a lot on offense, will be interesting to see how they reload.  Southwestern played Douglass within a point in 3rd rd of playoffs and it will be interesting to see how Douglass does without Crowdes and Burton (and I think Neal graduated, too).

You could definitely argue BG higher and in the "bag to shake up and pull out".  Yes they lost their most of their offense, but their strength is back in a fabulous defense.  BG's argument is we beat #2, 3 and 4 and 3 beat #1.  Our defense returns a dominant defensive line an exceptional couple in the LB corps and secondary.  BG has proven year in and year out they are one of the premier programs and will reload.  Still king of the mountain until someone knocks them off.  But I agree with the previous comment that the top 4 (or 5) teams could all be anywhere.

Man 5A is good top to bottom.  This class is absolutely loaded with quality teams and great coaching staffs.  Many of the other classes there are 2-3 really good teams and then everybody else that plays football.  But when you look at 5A there is so much quality football being played across the state.  Going to be a fun year to keep up with this class.

I agree. Left them out of bag initially until we see what offense going to look like. Defense wins championships so with strong defense certainly have a shot unless offense a disaster.

I never understood the pre-season rankings. No one knows how their team will do until some hitting occurs in a real live game. I say wait until after week 3 to start doing rankings. You will have a good idea then.

Pre-season rankings, from all mediums, are created to generate conversation.

I will say, ours here at BGP tend to be much closer than other places, but I am admittedly biased.

As a BG fan, you know I fully support this.

HOWEVER, as good as I think BGs defense is, you still have to score to win SOME (and moreso move the  chains some to give them a rest).  I do think BGs offense will continue to improve this season.  How much and when are the questions.  And I think there are still personnel to be moved around as well.  But that's the situation when you only return 2 guys.  BG scrimmaged a very good Scott County team (#6 on this list) and a potentially great Male squad, who both held BGs young offense in check.

Do all the teams BG plays have defenses as good as say Scott County?  Some yes and some no.  So I look for a slow escalation of execution and progress every game for BG and by the playoffs; they will be ready to compete at a playoff level.  But Preseason....  I think 5 is where they should be based on their roster compared to the other 4 teams above them and how they have played in their scrimmages.  Just my opinion.  It will all play out in the end.  This is about right now.  Go Purples!

The name of the game this year for the Purples is about the exact opposite of what normally is the teams desire.

Typically, the Purples want their offense on the field. 9 out of 10 seasons the offense will average more than 40 points per game; along with a defense that will dominate field control, giving the offense a short field each possession.

This season, the defense is likely to do as in years past (they are really good!) but the potential problem is that if our offense can’t consistently move the ball down the field and has several 3 and outs, the D will get gassed fairly quick. The Purples schedule this year will not allow our defense to take many plays off.

The key this year for Purples will be long, sustained drives on offense that produce points and move the clock. First Downs will almost be as important as touchdowns. Control the clock, don’t turn it over, keep our defense fresh. If Purple offense can score 21-28 points a game, with long drives - our defense can seal the deal for a “W”

Believe me, as a 35 year Purples fan, it’s very rare to admit that the offense has a great chance to sputter this season. Very rare!

However, the sky is not falling. Many schools would love to have the athletes that the Purples have. Typically (unless you’re the Vito Tisdale’s of HS football players), the young Purples have to stand in line behind the upper classmen.  Purples coaching staff may need to let the young guns on offense get some substantial PT.

Going to be a fun, interesting season for the Purples. Their pre-season ranking is right on the money and may be good locker room material for them!

I think Southwestern should be over Pulaski. They bring back 5 fifth year seniors. Have about 10-15 others who held back. Got their RB who was there freshman and sophomore year back in the district as a fifth year senior. Bring back the whole OL. Think they can sneak up on some of the bigger names.

They are solid - especially if they soak the field all week when a faster team comes to town 😉

Sincerely,

Fred D.
