Who was the first celebrity?

Just heard this question asked on a podcast and I was curious what some of you think.

Who was the first celebrity?

A quick Google search shows the name Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Never heard of him.

Alexander the Great?  Cleopatra?  Jesus?  Julius "The Doctor" Caesar?

I don't think you can say there was one first celebrity. Everyone doesn't recognize the same people as celebrities.

Who were the people on the podcast saying was the first celebrity?

To me the notion of a recognizable person on a grand scale probably couldn't have happened until the 1920s. Prior to that time the reach of information was so limited. I'll not argue that he was a worldwide celebrity, but I think Babe Ruth was the first American celebrity in the word's most recognizable sense.

You've never taken my World History class. Chapter 11 - we spend several minutes on him each year! ?

Cleopatra was one of the names they mentioned.  Then they just talked about suggestions they'd found on the internet.

I think that celebrities began in the early 1900’s with silent films.  Radio and newspapers helped make them famous.  I googled the following list:

Biggest stars of the 1920's
  1. Douglas Fairbanks. Actor | Robin Hood. ...
  2. John Barrymore. Actor | Twentieth Century. ...
  3. Gloria Swanson. Actress | Sunset Blvd. ...
  4. Bebe Daniels. Actress | 42nd Street. ...
  5. Olive Thomas. Actress | Beatrice Fairfax. ...
  6. Mary Pickford. Actress | Coquette. ...
  7. Marion Davies. Actress | Going Hollywood. ...
  8. Charles Chaplin. Writer | The Great Dictator.

Interesting. I was thinking more along the lines of when mass communication became a thing. We usually attribute that to Guttenberg. When was he around? 1500s?

I am not sure how we define "celebrity," but I would guess there were many (in)famous folks going back ages. Rulers, monarchs, military leaders, and popes that millions probably knew of.
