The Cru overwhelmed Highlands in the 4th Q to break open a close game.

Wyatt Vieth led the charge with 30 points(At least 14+ of those in the 4th quarter). Jude Bessler added 16 for the Cru. I beleive Sam Vinson had 19 points in the game, and a few nice blocks as well.

Not a very good game for my Birds overall. Too many turnovers. Hopefully they get back on track against a tough Beechwood team.

I didn’t get a chance to go tonight, but looking at the score, it looks The Cru fixed the defensive issue they had against Beechwood. Very good and smart team.

Should be a tremendous 9th Region postseason! Really looking forward to it.

Wow, the Birds got grounded.

9th Region is crazy this year. Cov-Cath is not so unbeatable after losses to Cincy schools and Male. It appears if a team can shut down Diskin, and match up physically with Green, Hupman, Starks...they are beatable. Any one of 6 or 7 teams have a chance with the right draw...defense..and 3 point shooting. Could be fun at NKU when I thought all along it was a Colonel march to Rupp....maybe not so much!

Maybe but how bad did Cov Cath beat Highlands, St. Henry and Beechwood?

OK this game really confused me. At times it was hard to say that either team was showing any advantage momentum.

 

Early on it felt like St. Henry’s shot selection was terribly off, rushing one nothing burger after the other.

 

The Birds weren’t exactly rocking the world either, and the Cru was doing a pretty good job of controlling Vinson.

 

In the 2nd quarter Highlands was starting to pick it up looking like they were the much stronger team in the half court set, and they were starting to break away a bit giving the impression that we’d see more of this from them in the 2nd half as they ended the half up 6.

 

Their defense was incredible making St. Henry’s typical fantastic passing game look like a chaotic mess.

 

In the 3rd quarter the Cru immediately knotted things back up, but only to have Highlands once more end the 3rd up 6.

 

Going into the 4th I felt the St. H looked tired and razzled, and I thought that Highlands would take advantage of this, but WOAH!!!, the Cru got a second wind, and in a big way that I didn’t see coming.

 

I love this St. Henry team, but I don’t understand their lapses. I love their teamwork, and obviously their “never say die” attitude where now anyone who has been following them knows that no matter what, you can’t count them out.

 

They’re amazing at adjusting, and turning it on when their backs are against the wall.

 

Remember in the All ‘A’ Classic state final when they looked pretty lame the 1st half, but ended the 2nd quarter on a high note only to pick it right back up in the 3rd while they were on something like an 18-0 run? That’s when they look like a team that nobody can beat, and then I start fantasizing that that spirit of theirs could make them rise even high enough to take on the likes of say 9th Region’s dominant Blue Colonels. Might sound crazy I know, but to do said miracle, it’s gonna take a team like theirs with that “extra special something”.

 

With that said, I was convinced that going into the 4th quarter against Beechwood last week we’d see that “extra special something” kick in. and that they’d finally serve the Tigers a final blow, but no, Beechwood seriously looked like they had found themselves, and then the Cru just sorta looked like a so-so team.

 

Will the real St. H team please stand up. They’re definitely my dark horse team, and the only team that I believe has the “extra special something” chemistry that can help them rise above.

 

Doesn’t hurt either that they have IMO one of the best calm cool and collective coaches in the whole state of Kentucky in Coach Faust. He gets what he wants outta these guys without looking like a demented monster in the process. That’s not to say that all coaches do, but with him you barely know that he’s there, but don’t let that fool you, the man surely knows what he’s doing.

 

Often times when we see the regular season winding down, most teams and fans alike start looking ahead to the districts, making the final couple of games feel insignificant, but I have to say that this year we’re seeing a good handful of teams with some seriously solid regular season ending games..

 

Highlands finishing up their regular season with St. H, and Beechwood. St H finishing theirs with Highlands, and Holy Cross. Conner with Holmes and NewCath. NewCath with Newport and Conner. Holmes with Conner, and Simon Kenton. CovCath (we all remember this 9th Region team, don’t we?) with Male and Madison Central.

 

It’s really heating up folks, and even these season ending games are hot enough to keep us salivating until the 2nd season begins. I’ve chatted with various folks who feel like they’re not even gonna bother with the Regional tournament because they think that the results are already a forgone conclusion. I get that, and they very well may be right, but I personally feel like there’s some damn good basketball ahead of us, and even more reason this season to see if David can rise up to sleigh Goliath.
