This is a move with multiple layers to dissect. All of which are very interesting topics of debate, a few of the more noticeable.

 

1. Did Brandon Smith pass on replacing his dad at his alma mater? Why would he do that? Is South Warren a better opportunity? Or is this more of the train of thought you never want to be the guy who comes after a legend?

 

2. If the rumors are true, did Boyle choose Haddix over Chris Wolfe? What does that say about Haddix that he gets the job over the HC at one of the state's most known 6A schools? What does that say about Wolfe and how does Male feel?

 

3. Haddix has no ties to the Boyle program but had heavy ties in EKY. Is he just seeing Boyle as the better step in his career or is he getting out of dodge due to other reasons that may have rose after the Redhounds failed to bring a State Title when expectations were that there should be a trophy in the case with the talent he has had?

 

4. Lots of Boyle fans were super critical of Haddix's coaching in '17 and '18. Specifically in the finals, in '17 Smith out-coached him head to head and in '18 after Corbin beat a Boyle team most Rebel fans attributed to health, they were critical when Corbin seemingly laid an egg in the Finals to Central. Are Boyle fans concerned that Haddix might not be an elite "big game" Coach like they are accustomed to

 

5. There is no doubt Haddix is a proven winner and a program elevator. With that said, there have been a few red flags with his final product and some antics on and off the field from the competitiveness he promotes from his players and staff. Are Boyle fans concerned with any of this from a program that has done a pretty solid job of avoiding black eyes despite their notoriety?

 

6. What does this say about Corbin? If Haddix is chasing a Title, he has what most Corbin fans believe is one of his strongest crops of athletic talent set to be Seniors and Juniors. There has been plenty of rumblings that the Corbin staff wasn't exactly harmonious with a lot of former prominent Head Coaches.Where does Corbin go from here?

My personal take:

I like this move for both parties on the whole.

 

I think Brandon Smith would have been very uncomfortable having to live up to his father's monster legacy. With Haddix you force everyone to realize that there is a new sheriff in town and a different way of doing things, so even though the pressure and expectations are lofty, they are also warranted and tempered fairly at the same time.

 

Haddix can be polarizing and there has been plenty of "things that make you go hmmm" type of moments in varying capacities, but the one thing you can't ignore is the man is a stone cold winner and knows how to get his teams to a State Finals level. He is still young and learning his craft, so a move to Haddix could be a move for a guy who is capable for coaching 10+ years. He values the feeder system and this has been pivotal in Boyle's success.

 

Though he tends to leave a wake, it might actually be the edge Boyle needs to take their program to a new level. I am not sure Haddix ever had the raw talent as he will have at Boyle, he seemingly made the most of what he had at Corbin, but he seldom had D-1 type of guys like the Rebel program has been able to consistently generate.

 

Is there risk in the move? For sure.

 

Is there a chance one of the top programs in Kentucky evolves to a new level as a result? For sure.

 

Definitely the biggest headline of the off-season already!

As to the Chris Wolfe rumors, I heard a lot of them as well. I can't say with any certainty but my speculation is that Boyle may have offered Wolfe but he eventually turned it down.

 

Brandon is making his own mark and has a talented squad returning for the next few campaigns. My guess is he is settled there.

 

I was more critical of the 2018 ending than the performance of the coaches in most of the game. Central just played their game and won. The last second FG was a head scratcher to me but I wasn't in the huddle. The post game punch was my greatest disgust of decisions but that was a kid and not a coach.
