My #1 Favorite Christmas Song: Robert Earl Keen's "Merry Christmas from the Family".

 

I'm also a sucker for BOTH of Adam Sandler's Hanukkah Songs.

 

Dolly's "Hard Candy Christmas" is a jam.

 

Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is great.

 

Bruce's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is peerless.

 

Of all of the trillion versions of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" that have been made, I'm a fan of Idina Menzel and Michael Buble' (tip of the hat to Zooey Deschanel and Will Farrell as well).

Generally not a big fan of Christmas music, as my prior years working in retail spoiled it for me. But I get a kick out of Christmas songs re-interpreted in interesting ways. The other day I heard a version of "Oh Holy Night" done cowpunk style by the great Jason and The Scorchers that was really cool.

Hard to pick just one song sometimes. I will say Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas" and Nat King Cole doing "The Christmas Song" will never get old. As for albums, I'd say some of the ones done by the 50's and 60's "crooners" still sound good today (Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, Andy Williams, etc.) As far as "new" stuff, I'll stick with Amy Grant.

 

As for religious songs, it'll be hard to beat "Silent Night" being sung with nothing but a guitar as accompaniment during a candle-lit service on Christmas Eve.

I like the religious songs/carols over the secular ones by a wide margin. I like O Holy Night, Adeste Fidelis ((O Come Lets Us Adore Him) and Good King Wenceslaus (sp) among others. I also like the rendition of these songs by choirs. (Maybe it's the midnight mass in me when I was a tyke..which was followed by a trip to White Castle for hot chocolate.)

Finally, I liked it when for a couple of Christmas seasons, our own merry Getslow would have an Advent calendar of sorts as he counted down the days to Christmas by posting a beautiful song each day with a little history pertaining to it.
