Douglass continues its deepest penetration into the KHSAA playoffs as they welcome Owensboro to "The Farm". The Broncos (13-0) routed Southwestern in the quarterfinals, 44-8, behind another masterful defensive performance.

Displaying their own prowess on that side of the ball, Owensboro (12-1) shut down a high octane Fairdale offense, 41-6. This will be a battle of the top two scoring defenses in the state. Points may be at a premium, so look for the importance of turnovers and field position to go be magnified.

A win for Douglass would bring them one step closer to completing an incredible ascent to the mountain top of Kentucky football. For Owensboro, it's a chance to add another chapter to a tradition rich legacy and return to the championship game for the first time in five years.

Has Fredrick Douglass played a defense as good as Owensboro's? Has Owensboro played a defense as good as Fredrick Douglass's. I think both answers are no.

This time of year it is all about mistake free football. This game sets up to me in an old school low-scoring, possession focused game where a few pivotal plays will make the difference. I also think this is the first game that Owensboro will really miss star Imonte Owsley. They honestly haven't needed him until now (although you could say they needed him in the Evansville game, but truth be told Owensboro had multiple chances to win that game). So someone on the Owensboro offense will need to really step up in this game and I suppose that falls to SO QB Gavin Wimsatt, which is a lot to ask for a SO, but this is the semi-finals!

I don't know a ton about Freddie D except all the D1 talent they have and I know that's legit. So it should be an awesome game. I wish the timing of the game would allow me to make this one as I would likely drive to Lexington to make it if it didn't conflict with the BG game.

I'm pulling for the Red Devils! Give me:

Owensboro 14

FD 13

I think Douglass by at least 2 td's in this one.

Owsley has been a big loss for Owensboro, he's going to EKU but if he was about 6 foot, he would be going anywhere he wanted. That said, Owensboro has had to spread it around and it's made Hayden, Tinsley and Stevenson more valuable. I would say that both teams are playing their toughest opponent next week. Owensboro has a very fast and hard hitting defense. Fast and agile Defensive Line, outstanding linebackers and a couple of 6-2, 6-3 players in the secondary - Eberhart and Watkins. Really good Offensive line as well, outstanding athlete at QB and shifty RB in Avery. If Wimsatt is on on his passes, they are going to be tough to contain. FD looks to be primarily run offense with some great athletes and great O-line. QB is a big runner and can pass when needed. What I saw on youtube against Scott, the O-line is basically 3/4ths of the D-line as well. I think that would spell trouble as Owensboro's lines are 1-way players. Most all of Owensboro's players are 1-way, with some small exceptions as the LB's playing in some sets as FB on offense. Wimsatt's agility has caused problems for most all opponents as he escapes the pocket and runs or passes extending plays. No easy games from here on out for anyone. I'll take the Devils as well.

Owensboro 28-21.

Two games that stick out to me from Owensboro's schedule that let me know they are not quite on FD's level; a 19-point win over Graves County and a 6-point win over Henderson. I think Frederick Douglass would have put a running clock on both. FD wins this one 28-14.

I don't think Owensboro has the horses to keep up with FD on their turf.

FDHS- 34

OHS- 14

CALPREPS says 26-17 Douglass.

FD is a great team - no doubt. I watched the Scott County vs FD on Youtube as well as the LexCath vs FD. LexCath runs a similar offense to Owensboro from what I saw, and yes I get they have the great QB. LexCath scored 31. Scott had no passing game to speak of and it was pretty bad anytime they attempted a pass and lost by 10. Owensboro has a MUCH better defense than LexCath, so I think Owensboro competes well in this matchup. FD has a couple of hosses on the O-line, but they play both ways (64 and 62) - great blockers. I think Wimsatt can give them trouble they haven't seen since Beau Allen as far as the run/pass option. I hope it's shown online! Should be a good one.

Squirel to your point. OHS played horrible in the first matchup with Graves but running clocked them on the turf of Rash stadium 2 weeks ago. Graves is a solid 5A school. Henderson is an old rivalry game and Henderson is big and very athletic at the skill positions. I agree FD may have running clocked them, but they don't play Henderson or Graves this week, but Owensboro. FD should be favored, but the Red Devils believe they can win this.

FD has turf don’t they? Friday night’s games around the state could be a mess with rain in the forecast.

Keep your eye on the Owsley situation. He has been cleared to return to sports activities. Could get interesting quickly.

Good luck Fredrick Douglass. Hopefully you play your best game to date, but not your best game by the time the season is over.
