New playoff format

Featured Replies

Maybe it's because there are so many districts that are so much better than some others but there are a LOT of games being played in the first two rounds that shouldn't have been played until the 3rd round in most years.

Wayne and Corbin

Boyle and LexCath

Franklin and Central

CAL and Desales

LCA and Somerset

Ashland and Russell

Bardstown and Etown

Freddy and Scott County

Bowling Green and South Warren

I know I'm beating a dead horse and have made some disparaging comments already but I really can't stand what they've done.

You are, you have, and I agree.

In many ways the round 2 games may be better than the round 3 games.

I agree as well both Douglass and Scott Co. were better than any one else besides Male and played 2nd week last year as well.

So is the 3rd round seeded based on RPI, thus negating actual region championships or does that not start till round 4?

3rd round is by RPI, top 4 in the east and top 4 in the west. Semifinals are reseeded top 4 state wide. You could have east vs east and west vs west or east vs west in both games, depending on final RPI.

I'm not on board yet but one thing it does is bring some excitement to the first couple of rounds in certain districts, particularly those mentioned above.

So basically there’s no longer actual regional championships? That’s stupid.

KHSAA saves on trophies.

No regional champs and no regular season district champs.

Playoff district champ and state champ is it.

Good question! They can't call round 3 a regional championship. What is it now? Will there be a trophy for winning round 3 and what will it say on it?

If there are any such trophies - and there may not be - they'll say "Round 3 winner". Just a guess.

Maybe we've finally reversed the "everybody gets a trophy" trend.

Is there a breakdown of East / West schools somewhere? I see the RPI listed on the KHSAA website but want to look at possible match ups for round 3

Yeah old format was way better.

The new format mirrors the basketball district method, with the exception that only the "champion" moves on.

The new format creates some really boring, lopsided rematches. Using Newport Central Catholic/Dayton (101-14), Beechwood/Holy Cross (131-6) and Nicholas County/Bracken County (92-6) as examples, the losers of both the regular season and playoff games were throttled. These games and the other games like this throughout the state were virtual wastes of time and did nothing but add another week to the schedule.

While the previous format created many of these same boring/lopsided results, at least you were playing a new opponent, and maybe traveling a bit to get there. At very least, it provided a post-season playoff atmosphere.

IF the KHSAA insists on staying with the present format, please only have the top two teams in the district play for the title and the right to move on. These will be competitive games and make the regular season really mean something, and would allow them to drop a week from the schedule.
