Since I'm up, I'll take a whack at the new playoff format.

 

Yes, the games we're seeing this week as District Championships would previously be probably third round games, but you'd still have this big knock out of top teams in an early round. Scott County/Douglass, Pikeville/Hazard, LexCath/Boyle all would happen too early in the old format, too.

 

The KHSAA has told me the third round will be a Regional Championship trophy round. So, that still exists, just later.

 

Now, at least, once we get past this round, and into RPI seeding there's no way I see for the top 2 RPI teams to face each other before Kroger Field. If Cov Cath and Douglass advance, they won't meet next round just because the bracket says so. They only meet in the final. Same for Male and North Hardin, Bell and Tilghman, KCD and Pikeville.

 

Do people hate having to play back through the district this week? Oh yeah.

 

Do people want to see the best two teams in each class at Kroger Field? I think so.

 

The old way meant Johnson Central-Boyle County could be the semifinal. The new way won't let that happen.

 

My philosophy on this is that no one is ever happy, regardless. Let's complain about something new. Here we go.

 

Actually Boyle/LexCath would have met in the 3rd round like they have about a dozen times previously. I just don't understand what one change has to do with another. Use the RPI starting in the third round just like they are doing. Just don't make them play their district opponents the first two rounds. One has nothing to do with the other. I think in the long run many will like the reseeding when it gives up match ups in the finals that never would have happened but the district opponents in the first two rounds is stupid and it stinks and I can complain about it for as long as I desire.

Not arguing for district format or saying people shouldn't complain. And I agree that LexCath/Boyle would have happened by third round, regardless. I don't think it's a particularly good scenario for top teams to have to play each other early just because of some lines people have drawn.

Only complaint about new format is it takes away from teams that could host a regional and Semi-final. I like the idea of odd and even years of who gets to host. Now going to have potentially same teams always hosting the regional and semi-finals.

With the semi-finals being 'state-wide' regardless of geography the semis should be at central, neutral site(s).

 

Five hour drives one way (10 hours round trip) are not probable but can be possible. Sometimes it seems logistics were tossed out the window when coming up with this plan.

 

The old way had Mayfield traveling to Beechwood and vice versa. Some Genius had us on the same side of the bracket.

You win a state championship or you don't. No one talks about how many "regional championships" anyone has in football. You come from a tradition-rich program, Mayfield's goal is to win a state title...you guys give a hill of beans about winning a regional championship along the way? I typically pull for CovCath, I know every year they have won a state title, I have never heard a single person talk about the non-state years that CovCath won a regional championship along the way. Not once.

Agreed. If my teams had been good enough to make it that far, I likely would have said "we made it to State semis" rather than saying "we won a Regional Championship."

Had the opportunity to officiate every round of playoffs in 4 and 6 class format. By far some of the absolute best games I had the opportunity to work were round 3 games when we only took the district winner and runner up. Some of the semis I worked were absolute beat downs. I really think the football committee needs to re-evaluate the entire structure.
