Junkie got it. They could all pass the ball and they were all pretty decent against the pass. Ryle, BG, and Danville were all much weaker in those two areas.

Also, the 2A game featured two teams that couldn't pass the ball so by default one of them had to win.

If you think back through the years this is a factor time and time again.

besides being private schools and winning a state title?

1. All three have a large roster size based which means they all have a high participation rate. Granted Trinity should have a large number of players but CovCath and NewCath have roster sizes comparable to powers Highlands/LexCath and Beechwood in their classes.

2. All have a passing attack. The days of being 90/10 run (or 90/10 pass) seem to have passed us by. Your offense must be balanced and an equal threat. I know Mercer got away with being a run dominated team in 2A but that is kind of an exception for this year with the merger.

3. Fan support. Not that other premier schools lack it, but if you don't have it winning on the road can be tough.

Only problem here though is that in 2003, 2004 and 2005 at least in 2A the teams that won were strictly running squads. The teams that they defeated in those games were very pass heavy as well. In 2003 Danville took Beechwood to the woodshed behind approximately (I don't feel like looking up the numbers) 500 yards rushing.

I would use 2004 St.X as an example, but that was probably the most balanced offense in St. X history.

Not to try and disprove you, actually these are the only examples that I can think of where your statement does NOT apply. So more or less I agree, but this is what will be brought up in contrast.

None of the other teams had Danville fumbling the snap running the clock out....

I was thinking the same thing. The Danville fumble probably led to the single A win more than anything else. Granted NCC had to pass to win, but an opportune turnover was more the key here.....

Hats off to the NCC coaching staff. With our secondary already weak they really spreaded the field out and attacked us with the pass. Plus outside of two plays we NEVER had anyone within 6 yards of their QB while he is looking downfield. I've never seen a QB get that much time to pass ever. They whipped our lines behinds everytime they went to the air. We had very limited success trying to throw the ball yesterday and our "BET" offense could never get going. NCC would have really whipped us if they would have connected on those 3 TD passes that were lost.
