Is there any doubt that Mercer is a top 10 team in 3A now!

Current situation at CAL

I was very wrong about this game. CAL just appears to be very soft on D this season.

I said it at the beginning of the year. CAL would really miss LeFors. He had an attitude on the sideline, that his teams played with on the field. I don't see it in Cantwell. They better find some fight in them, in 2 weeks the Colts come calling.

Congratulations to the Titans. I will be the first to say that I thought that CAL was win. I did say that it would not surprise me if Mercer won. I just thought that after the Boyle game and coming home that CAL would be ready to play. Sounds like the Titans was the team ready to come out and play. Any stats on this game ?

Congrats. Nice win. I am not surprised that much after seeing them both against Boyle. Mercer will continue to make noise this year. David has the whole program on the right track.

It was an exciting game to watch...offensive shootout in the 1st half with Mercer racking up 360 yards of total offense and CAL going for 245 with the halftime score 35-28 Titans...in the 2nd half, both teams made adjustments defensively and the production was more of a “grind it out” game as Mercer had only 118 yards with CAL putting up 166 total yards of offense...Mercer ran about 90% of the time as the O Line and RB’s did a great job against a very big CAL D Line...CAL was much more efficient offensively than they were against Boyle especially in their passing game as they featured 3 outstanding WR/TE’s Leeper, Green & 6’5” William Paar who was a load to defend with his combination of size and athleticism. CAL played very well and is legit tainted...despite having 3 losses, they are going to be a factor in the 3A discussion and playoffs and it would not surprise me to see them beat DeSales in 2 weeks for that big district game. This is the toughest district in all of KHSAA regardless of class with 3 legit Top 10 teams. However, Mercer clearly outplayed CAL and deserved to win the game. Nothing flukey at all about this outcome as the better team won. Mercer’s offense is catching up to their defense over the last 2 games as the first 4 games including the Boyle game was carried by the Mercer defense. Mercer’s running game is very strong with a solid O Line and the passing game has been effective in select spots.

 

IMO, the passing game & pass defense are the two greatest areas of improvement for Mercer but they have the athletes & playmakers in both of those areas to make those adjustments so there is still a great deal of upside for the Mercer team. They are not yet a “finished product” clicking on all cylinders(like Boyle, obviously) but they are improving and the team confidence is growing. We will know a lot more about their playoff chances come Oct 25th when DeSales comes to AJ Field for what likely will be for the district title & coveted #1 playoff seed in the toughest district in the state.

I would say there is no question. They beat a top 10 4A team in Anderson, played Boyle as tough as anybody has YTD and beat the defending state champs on their own field. The narrative always seems to be that the team they beat is not as good as everyone thought or overrated. I think the Mercer team loves being the underdog and not getting any respect. It gives them their edge. Mercer didn’t celebrate like they won the super bowl last night. The players fully expected to beat CAL. Which teams in 3A ranked ahead of Mercer have two better wins than CAL and Anderson?

We appreciate the kind words about our team. What makes last night such a big win is that CAL is a very good football team. I am a big fan of CAL Coach Hunter Cantwell. We were one win away from playing his Tilghman team in 2003. The Rebels got them and the Birds got us in the snow by a TD, state semifinals.

 

Coach Cantwell is doing a great job with the football part at CAL and is a high character guy as well. I was glad our teams prayed together after the game.

 

Our kids and assistant coaches have worked like crazy these past five years. One example, Mike Floro put in our (then brand new to Mercer) offense when our current seniors were 8th graders on his middle school team. We don't win last night without Coach Floro doing that for our kids and program. There are many more examples like that. This was a team win and a community win.

 

There is still a bunch of football to be played and we still have much to do. But, it is ok to take a step back on a Saturday and be thankful/celebrate the accomplishment our kids and assistants pulled off last night on the road.

 

I agree with the earlier comment, we are in the toughest district in the state. We have much respect for the opponents in our district.

 

I really appreciate theguru and BGPreps. HS football in KY is special. It has been so for me for a long time. It is great to have a place to celebrate kids, coaches, and Friday nights.

 

If any BGPreps people come to a Titan game, give me a holler. I do believe we have special young men on our team and I believe you would enjoy watching them play, their effort, their physicality, and how they celebrate and support each other. It is an honor to coach them and I am proud of them.

2003 was a fun season for Mason County. Squeaked by Larkey, Rockcastle and that big monster on the line they had in the second round; thumped the Tomcats in round 3, setting up the ice bowl at Highlands. You say snow, I say liquid nitrogen. Coldest footballer game I ever sat through. My pinkie fingers finally thawed out yesterday.

This right here, is more important to me than the huge win against a really great team! Thank you for bringing this to light. Very proud to be a Titan!! High character is very important and is drilled into these young men by all the coaches, but it starts at the top and we are blessed to have a great Christian man, filling that role. Add to that, our AD is an assistant and is a minister too, along with his former player son who serves as chaplain for our team. I hope these guys all see this, to encourage them that much more to keep doing what their doing! @ChiefSmoke you should be very proud of the impact your leadership is making in our young me! Thank you for sharing this. Your wife and the kids with her were very kind. One of the kids went back to get me another drink because the one they handed me was not as cold.... they made an impression on me as well.

 

I had fun interacting with the chain crew. Told them they may be the Christian’s but we run behind JESUS.... Jesus Garcia.

 

For the record, we also run behind Noah and can bring in Isaiah. Malachi is a running back. We have a Biblical offense.
