Refs Dominate Games

Featured Replies

I'd say there's probably some truth to that. But there are way more parents yelling nonsense at refs than there are refs saying something crazy to coaches. Way more.

I agree with that too. But I am talking abut refs saying things to players and fans that they would never say in person outside of gym. In small towns and after years of being around you know refs outside of the games. Too many refs with huge egos on a power trip because these games are the only place they are in control. In real life they don't have the type of control and importance that they do in these games.

For those who have watched a lot of games this year, I have two questions:

a) Have you seen a 3-second call?

b) Have you seen a palming/carrying call?

I'm not sure either one of those calls are ever made in a high school basketball game anymore.

I saw several palming calls in the KOB this year.

The majority of the games I have only watched ges played in the 10th, 14th and 16th region. The level of officiating is a lot higher in the 10th region. Games played in the 14th and 16th seem like at least one, sometimes two, of the refs over shadow the good official.

I have been for going back to two refs for at least the last 10 years. I don't really care about the high school game, but college i think so. In my opinion, a lot of these refs have gotten into the habit of anticipating calls, instead of calling what you see. You have refs making calls from mid court,on plays under the basket, where a lot of times their vision is obstructed ,and they are 50 feet away from the play. The ref under the basket calls nothing!!! Go figure. I'm not going to get into a urinating contest with people on here. There are pros and cons to every argument. But what usually happens with three refs, in a lot of games ,is it becomes a foul calling fest.Which turns into a free throw shooting contest. Don't believe people pay money to watch refs call games,OR to watch players shoot free throws, with ten minutes left in a game. All the fouls also upsets the flow of the game. Going to two refs...yeah,they are going to miss some calls, but it happens in every sport ,at every level. It's part of the game. Deal with it!!! They played with two refs for a long time. It didn't seem to be a big deal back in the day. SOMETIMES,...change is not good!!! Just my thoughts. I do agree,as a high school coach of another sport,parents/fans need to get a grip!!! At least some of them do. It's just the way it is for now.Things always seem to come full circle eventually. Good luck to all the basketball teams.

If you truly believe officiating is bad, I can't fathom how having fewer officials on the floor is the way to go...

You're correct, very seldom.

Actually, I've seen both quite a bit this year, BUT, I agree that I see both less than I used to.

I’ve watched a lot of 10th Region Boys and Girls games this year. I have seen a few bad calls, but never an overall poorly officiated game. What I am seeing are JV coaches riding the refs in the JV game so bad, it effects the varsity game initially, especially if the JV and Varsity officials share locker rooms. Not a good idea if you are a JV coach.

The only thing that I just don’t get, are the non calls in the last seconds of a game.

I know most officials let the last few seconds of close games play out, and swallow their whistle.

I understand they want the players to decide the game, not themselves.

However, if it’s a foul in the first minute of a game, it should be a foul in the last seconds of a game.

We should get together sometime and watch some games...because what I usually see is three quarters of NOT calling a foul, and then suddenly it becomes a whistle-fest in the fourth quarter when things tighten up. But, I agree with the premise...if it's a foul (or not a foul) in the beginning, it's a foul (or not a foul) at the end of the game. You (the official) shouldn't be changing the way you call a game just because the game gets closer to the end.

In the end, forget about what the coaches and fans want. What the players NEED, is consistency. You'd hope that it'd be consistent from game to game, but at the very least, it'd be consistent within an individual game.

As to the original post and the need for 3 officials...I think with the popularity of the 3-point shot, it's going to be very hard to go back to just 2 officials. Players are just too spread out nowadays and picks are being set all over the court. It's darn near impossible to be able to watch them all.

I'd say there's probably some truth to that. But there are way more parents yelling nonsense at refs than there are refs saying something crazy to coaches. Way more.

Without a doubt. The worse part of going to a game is listening to the crowd holler at refs, players, and coaches.

I would love to go to their place of work and yell at them.

I have seen a few instances of carrying called this season, but I have seen and heard hundreds of 3-second calls. From the stands.

Agree. No way we can ever go back to 2 officials.

Was both a basketball coach (many years) and varsity high school referee (one year). I say that to let readers know a little from where I am coming. I never walked off the court happy as a referee with the job I had just done. I knew every rule, and I hustled my butt every minute on the court, but as one of a two member crew you cannot be in position to be 100% sure on every call you make. I left refereeing because I am a perfectionist and my performance did not reach those self imposed standards. Perfection will never happen in a coach's, player's or referee's performance. But, chill as a fan and trust they're almost always doing their best. Three refs at the varsity level creates the best vantage points for the best refereed decisions.

Simple. One less guy on the court to make a bad call!!!
