Refs Dominate Games

Featured Replies

By this logic we should reduce the number of players. One or two or six less bad players creating this style of play.

There are certainly a couple hollywood refs, but that is few and as another poster stated they tend to be better refs anyway. Odd that this post continues to ignore the players and parents that are responsible for the sloppy play that is happening on the court.

The refs are the least of the problems in HS basketball.

Yeah but they're also the only ones getting paid as well. They make more than coaches do, players volunteer, and fans actually pay money.

Referees make more than coaches? Where?

Regarding the initial post concerning refs taking over a game... in many cases it is player fatigue. Players get tired and don’t move their feet and reach and get lazy. So a game that appears to be well played can become an apparent “foul fest”.

A veteran coach once told me that the minimum standard for officials is that they be at least as competent as the level of play they are working. So the higher up the ladder you go the better officiating you should expect. Keep that in mind the next time your team makes unforced errors and mistakes.

If a coach makes an $8,000 a year, that is 600 dollars a month added to their paycheck. If a referee in a three man crew makes 75 dollars a game and works 3 games a week, they get $900 a month.

Varsity Officials get roughly $70 a game. Varies by Region. Typical work 30 games a season on average. Makes $2100. Coaches salaries are less???

Bottom line, fans go to games to root for their school. Foul go for them, they cheer. Foul goes against them, they boo. Always one AMAZING Option..... don’t like the way they officiate, Replace them with yourself. KHSAA is always looking for new zebras.

Your math is off. All officials don't make $75 a game (most don't), and all don't work three games a week.

But for the sake of argument, let's pretend officials make more money than coaches. Is that supposed to excuse the behavior of everyone else who causes problems in high school sports? It seems as if you feel like officials should get the brunt of things because they allegedly make more money than coaches. Because people volunteer, they are excused from behaving like idiots?

I'm pretty sure referees work more than 30 games a year. There are weeks when they have four games and I have seen them work twice in one day before. I was responding to the whole idea that, "They make mistakes some times and they are the least important problems in basketball." While I agree with this, the expectation should always be that they are in the correct position and make the correct call at all times. I know it's not realistic, but the standard should be high.

It bothers me when they make players chase balls that rolled towards the gym wall. Why can't they get the balls themselves while the players get in defensive position? But I'm kind of going off on a tangent here.

I have refereed lower level games and yes it is much harder then people realize.

I've been a head coach at a program for a few years. Been around High School coaching for 20 years.I don't know of any head coach that makes $8,000 to coach a sport .just saying.

PP1, I think you're backing yourself into a weird corner by even trying to go down the path of who makes more, parents having to pay, and what that means in the grand scheme of things.

The reasons we as officials don’t chase the ball is we don’t take our eyes off the players. We need at least one (two if there is three officials!) set of eyes on the players at all times.

If I’m in a two man game, my partner calls a foul and is reporting it to the table while I’m chasing the ball. then we have a shove, push or punch, fight, or anything who is going to see that if we are worried about the ball. The ball is the least of my worries when calling. And if by some chance we lose that ball, they will find one to replace it.

I have never seen a player retrieve a ball, and before he gets back the official quick start the play.

As far as two and three officials I will leave this. The average age of officials is raising every year, while the age of the players never change. Let that sink in. There is more officials over the age of 50, than under the age of thirty.

Over 70 percent of officials never last longer than two seasons. The number one reason for leaving is verbal abuse.

The game is getting faster and faster (fundamentals aren’t keeping up either) and you want to take one official off, and expect two older guys (who even if in shape are not going to keep up with 16-18 year olds without a sub for an entire game.)to cover more areas while complaining about them anticipating and being out of position in three man? How many players play the entire 32 minutes?

There are plenty of coaches making $8k.

Ok. Names please.

Yeah, because that's the appropriate thing to do...

Many public schools have their supplemental salary (and salary schedule in general) schedule publicly available for viewing online. There are more than a few schools state wide with coaches salaries in the and $8k range.
