OBC2018 Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 I have watched 20+ high school basketball games this season. In every game there is at least a quarter that is dominated by the referees, the whistle blows every trip down. It seems like many of the refs are anticipating what will happen instead of reacting. Maybe KHSAA should go to two refs.
The Double Deuce Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 I sat and watched a dad make an absolute fool of himself at an 8th grade boys' game recently from a Boone Co. middle school, I mean screaming at the refs constantly, and all I could think of was this: not in a million years. Parents / Fans are the WORST. They say so many things to refs as they run by that they'd never say to another man's face if on the street somewhere. It is unbelievable. It is a hard job, I am going to continue to work under the assumption they are doing the best they can and are being as fair as they can be, and in the rare instance where one of those two aren't the case (doing their best, or being fair), you cover your mouth as a coach and talk to them when the moment arises. The behavior of fans / parents is so beyond okay when it comes to the treatment of officials, I can't even believe these people are real.

The behavior of fans / parents is so beyond okay when it comes to the treatment of officials, I can't even believe these people are real. Majority of them are living their dream thru their kid. I’ve coached all over the country never have I thought a referee wasn’t giving their all. If parents and a lot of coaches would look in the mirror. Coaches make mistakes players miss layups. Everyone including the official are growing and learning. Some officials are better than others some understand the game better. The same can be said about the player , coach , or fan. The game is nothing but a tool to teach life lessons in a fun way. I always tell my players adjust to the officiating as you will have to adjust to your family life or worksite. I think NO official is trying to be the main attraction.
dd734 Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 I to take in many games every year. I see some good officiating, and some not so good. I see calls that make me scratch my head a little, I see non calls that make me do the same. Over all, I think the officials do a good job. The only thing that I just don’t get, are the non calls in the last seconds of a game. I know most officials let the last few seconds of close games play out, and swallow their whistle. I understand they want the players to decide the game, not themselves. However, if it’s a foul in the first minute of a game, it should be a foul in the last seconds of a game. Other than that, I think it usually washes out. In reply to The Double Deuce, I couldn’t agree more. Some parents, and fans are flat out embarrassing, and should be ashamed of the way they act. I see it at every level, from grade school on up through high school. Come on people, go enjoy watching your favorite player play. There will be a day when it’s all over, and the officials won’t be part of your memories. However, others will remember you, and your crazy antics.
TheDeuce Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 School administrators need to start taking more responsibility when it comes to unruly fans/parents. It shouldn't take an official asking for someone to be removed for it to happen. Everyone in the gym knows when someone is acting a fool towards the officials. Start kicking these folks out and making examples of them and it will slow down. To @The Double Deuce's point, none of the clowns that show their rear end in the game would say the same things on the street, and they definitely don't have the stones to throw on some stripes and go out and officiate a game. They have absolutely no idea what it is like calling a game. None.
PP1 Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 I think NO official is trying to be the main attraction. I think there are some that do, but the ones I am thinking of are also good officials.
titan101 Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Might be some refs taking up for each other on here. I got to agree with my man Scott Padgett on this.
TheDeuce Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Might be some refs taking up for each other on here. I got to agree with my man Scott Padgett on this. The Scott Padgett situation is much different than what we're discussing here.
The Double Deuce Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Might be some refs taking up for each other on here. I got to agree with my man Scott Padgett on this. I have never reffed a basketball game in my life. I have coached a lot and played in a lot more, but never reffed a game. And wouldn't. Here is what I know for sure: Level of refereeing > behavior of parents. By a landslide.

In every game there is at least a quarter that is dominated by the referees, the whistle blows every trip down. It seems like many of the refs are anticipating what will happen instead of reacting. Maybe KHSAA should go to two refs. To the point, it's high school. These are very part time jobs for these guys and gals. They do their best. Some are better than others. I don't think what you have stated is any different than college or pro. There are stretches where there are more calls. Maybe they are trying to get control of the game or maybe it's just random or maybe the play is getting more aggressive--doesn't mean it's wrong. As far as the 2 official argument, I disagree. I wouldn't be totally opposed to it but they switched to three in tournament time and then decided that it should be the same during the season, so it's either needed all the time or it's not. I think that it is needed. The backside official sees a lot more than just 2 can see. There are always going to be eyes on the ball and under the basket with 2 or 3 and the calls are going to be made or missed. It's the backside of plays that is missed without the third official. I'd rather have 3.
titan101 Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 I am missing the whole Scott Padgett reference. There are some people saying fans wouldn't say this to a ref in person outside a game. I agree with Scott Padgett that it is the other way around. The refs do a lot of things in the these games they wouldn't do without that shirt on in real life face to face
TheDeuce Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 There are some people saying fans wouldn't say this to a ref in person outside a game. I agree with Scott Padgett that it is the other way around. The refs do a lot of things in the these games they wouldn't do without that shirt on in real life face to face I'd say there's probably some truth to that. But there are way more parents yelling nonsense at refs than there are refs saying something crazy to coaches. Way more.
TheDeuce Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 The game is hard enough to officiate the way it is. I bet if every game got broken down there are FAR more mistakes made by players and coaches than officials. Too much attention is paid to officials....why do so many forget they are human too? Simple. It's easier for them to point at the officials "mistakes" than it is to admit their team didn't do enough to win the game. There are MANY games my teams play where I feel like the officiating probably affected the outcome of the game. But literally every time, I can point to one or two (or more) plays that had they been executed, what the officials did wouldn't have mattered. Some people choose not to do that.
