article Region 10 Week 7 in Review - A Clear #1 Emerges

Week seven saw the region's top-ranked team put a bit of distance between itself and the rest of the pack, but their district won't be a cakewalk. The inaugural 2A tournament began in earnest, and the All-A starts up this week. Without further ado...

 

1. Campbell County (13-3, 5-0 region, 2-0 37th District). After a brief hiccup at the end of December, Coach Russell's squad has reeled off five wins in a row, and none have been very close. Last week saw the Camels tame the Cougars of Calvary Christian 95-39 behind 24 and 21 from Reid Jolly and Drew Wilson; with 14 players making it into the scoring column. Campbell went a scorching 13-25 from distance and 36-56 for the game, with Jolly and Wilson a combined 17 for 21. Ninth-region Highlands was next to fall, 81-52; with Jolly (24), Tanner Lawrence (17) and Wilson (15) leading the way. The Camels don't play until Friday - at 12-3 Walton-Verona of the 8th region - then turn around and travel to Fleming County the next evening to take on one of the 16th region's top teams in Rowan County.

 

2. Clark County (13-6, 5-1 region, 3-0 40th District). The schizophrenic Cardinals started the seek by easing past Harrison County 70-65 on the road, then overwhelming Montgomery County at home by 34. Jordan Graham (18), Brennan Canada (17) and Jared Wellman (14) led the Cards in Cynthiana; and Graham led all scorers against the Indians with 29 including 5 for 6 behind the arc. The next day was not so kind as GRC fell at home by ten to a 2-win Bryan Station (albeit from the ultra-competitive 11th region) team. Canada and Wellman were the only Cardinals in double figures, with Canada snagging a game-high 18 rebounds.

 

3. Scott (9-5, 5-0 region, 0-0 37th District). The Eagles remain the region's #3 going into week 8 (by a whisker) on the strength of a pair of wins in the 2A sectionals (does that sound "Hooserish"?). First was a convincing 89-71 defeat of Holmes with Trey Meister scoring 26 and hauling down 7 boards. Next was a ten-point win over Mason County that was tight until a late 19-2 Eagles run. Meister had 17 in this one, and was ably supported by David Hunter, Chad Ohmer and Kyren Simpson (14, 11 and 10). This week finds the Eagles lacing them up against Bourbon County in the next round of the 2A on Monday; then back home to host the Boone County Rebels the next evening.

 

4. Bourbon County (15-5, 7-1 region, 1-1 40th district). The Colonels put the region's longest winning streak on the line this evening against Scott in the 2A tourney; with the winner making a case to either remain (Scott) or move up (Bourbon) to regional #3. Bourbon won four games in a span of five days last week. Close 2A wins against Harrison County and Mercer County bookended easier victories over Shelby County (by 18) and Nicholas County (by 55). Nakyir Joyce and Jayce Wallace each tallied 18 against Harrison County; they led the scoring parade again against Shelby County (20 and 15); fifteen Colonels scored in the rout of Nicholas County; and Joyce and CaMarr Myers went a combined 15-23 in the Mercer County game. Bourbon follows the Scott game with an unenviable game the next night against Clark County; then at Mount Sterling on Friday to take on the Indians.

 

5. Bishop Brossart (11-7, 3-1 region, 0-1 37th District). The Mustangs beat up on 39th District competition last week, racing by both St. Patrick (96-46) and Bracken County (59-32). J.D. Schumacher led the 'stangs with 16 as fourteen Brossart players made the stat sheet against the Saints; while Stephen Verst had a career-high 17 against Bracken County. Brossart's only action scheduled this week is a trip down the road to Campbell County Middle School for a date with Robertson County in a matchup of two of the region's best small schools in the opening round of the All-A.

 

Put the next bunch of teams in a hat; pick them out at random; and you'll probably do a better job than me.

 

6. Montgomery County (9-9, 2-4 region, 1-2 40th District). The Tribe won its first two contests of the week, cruising ovr Menifee County and Bath County; then ran into a buzzsaw in Winchester and ending the week losing to a pretty decent Pulaski County squad. The Indians shot 61% from the field against Menifee County; then got double figures from Brandon Dyer, Will Cockrell and Pharoah Davis in the Bath County tilt. Estill County away, then a critical district seeding game at home against Bourbon County - and MoCo is the only 10th region team to defeat Bourbon this season.

 

7. Mason County (7-9, 4-4 region, 2-0 39th District). The Royals split a pair of 2A tournament games last week; first handling the Allen-less Wildcats of Pendleton County 66-53 behind Carson Brammer's 20 and Braden May's 18 (including four triples). Mason then fell to Scott by ten - a vast improvement over the two teams' first meeting - and was led by Xylon Frey's 16-rebound performance. Three road games this week - Greenup County, Ripley (OH) and Pendleton County.

 

8. Robertson County (13-4, 7-2 region, 2-1 38th District). I still think that the Black Devils are better than they showed in an 18-point loss at The Fieldhouse, but they still lack a "signature win". That can change this week when they face region #5 Bishop Brosssart in the All-A on Thursday; and the All-A was Robertson's shining moment last year when they defeated heavily favored Paris in the final. Coach Kelchs' squad thumped Nicholas County in their only action last week; Justin Becker and Alex Schalch tossing in 27 and 26.

 

9. Harrison County (4-13, 0-6 region, 0-2 38th District). The record belies the talent. Harrison lost a pair of tight games to upper echelon 10th region teams in week seven - falling by five each time to Bourbon County and Clark County. Spencer Free erupted for 28 in the loss to GRC. The 'breds are idle this week.

 

10. Paris (3-10, 2-3 region, 1-3 40th District). The Greyhounds rested last week, and see the floor again in the All-A on Tuesday against Bracken County.

 

11. Calvary Christian (10-5, 5-3 region, 2-1 37th District). The Cougars fell hard to Campbell County last Tuesday, then took care of business against Pendleton County and Silver Grove. Mason Rusch tallied 28 against the Wildcats, and scorched the nets for 41 in the Silver Grove matchup. Nicholas County (All-A), Lloyd Memorial and Villa Madonna provide the week eight opposition.

 

12. Pendleton County (9-10, 5-5 region, 3-0 38th District). As expected, Pendleton's stock has dropped precipitously with the loss of Dontaie Allen to a season-ending knee injury. Their losing streak reached seven last week with losses to Mason County and Calvary Christian (going 5-32 from three-point land in the CC game). The Cats can turn things around against St. Patrick on Tuesday; then they host Mason County in what is a winnable game. It's looking like PC may have to rely on drawing Nicholas County in the district to advance to the regional tournament in what started out as such a promising season.

 

13. Bracken County (7-9, 2-5 region, 1-1 39th District). The Polar Bears had a hard time finding the basket last week, losing 46-38 (28%, 3-20 from three) at Ludlow and 59-32 to Brossart (12 baskets total, 2-10 from three). Paris (All-A) and Dayton this week.

 

14. Augusta (4-12, 2-5 region, 1-1 39th District). Augusta took care of business against an undermanned Covington Latin squad 80-30 in their only contest last week; a quartet of Panthers reaching double figures and 7th grader Blake Reed right behind with 9. St, Patrick in the All-A (although the schedule has this game moved to January 23) and Fairview on the road this time around.

 

15. Nicholas County (4-11, 1-7 region, 1-3 38th District). The Bluejackets fell hard in a pair of games last week; falling to Robertson County by 37 and to Bourbon County by 55. An All-A matchup against Calvary Christian is the only game on this week's schedule.

 

16. St. Patrick (1-17, 1-6 region, 0-2 39th District). Three days after notching their first win of the season, the Saints fell back to earth; falling by 50 to Brossart. Patrick McKay did have 21 in the loss. At Pendleton County, then Augusta in the All-A this week (or on January 23; see note under Augusta).

 

17. Silver Grove (3-10, 0-3 region, 0-2 37th District). Spencer Macke scored 28 in the Trains' only game last week - a 27-point loss at Calvary. SCPA (OH) is this week's only contest.

Based on season stats alone if I was told a team was shooting 45% from field, 27% from 3, and 57% from FTs, I would not expect them to have a double digit victory streak. This is not a knock, but is Bourbon a ball-hawking, defensive team creating lots of TOs and getting all 50/50 balls? With the shooting so mediocre, can they sustain the mojo through Regional? This Scott game might tell us a lot.

Bourbon prevails in OT versus Scott last night. Looking more and more how distant the Top 1 is from the next 3 which might be a toss-up with Brossart threatening to join that 2nd group mix. Great job Mcpapa.
