Newport on the Levee

I just saw the Mitchell's Fish Market closed. It's been 17 years since the Levee opened its doors and I think Dewey's, Bar Louie, Brio, Barnes and noble, and Gameworks as the only originals left. Why do you think the Levy struggles to keep businesses?

The whole development was just sold a few months back for $100MM.

The company that purchased it is planning a complete "renovation" and overhaul of the area and businesses/attractions.

The area surrounding it is growing and it's time they fix the Levy. Like UKMF said, apparently the new ownership has some grand plans in the works. I heard Brio will be replaced as well. There is a lot of potential in that spot with all the new development.

The many times I've been to the Levee, it is crawling with teenagers, many of which are annoying and / or disruptive. Unless I'm going to the Movie, to the Aquarium, or to Brio, I don't go near the place.

Other than the bowling alley, Brio, and the movies I don't even know what is down there as far as retail and restaurants.

The Banks opening across the river certainly didn't do the levee any favors. There is not reason for me to be there unless we are going to a movie. Nothing else draws us and even then, sometimes I'd rather just go to Wilder or Florence.

Diners are increasingly moving away from the casual chains that were the bread and butter of developments like that throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. It's put a hurt on places like that with rents that usually exceed what small, independent restaurateurs or retailers are willing to pay. Fourth Street Live in Louisville has a devil of a time keeping places around with the way their rents are structured. Recently made a push to get local retailers and restaurants in there. We'll see how it goes.

I agree on the chaos that doesn't make it any fun and although I can't speak to the current situation just a couple of years ago things were so dangerous at the Newport Levee that the Newport Police Department had an eight man detail there to handle the issues. That is 8 extra police officers on top of all the officers already on shift in Newport to handle the problems at the Levee.

In other words, no thanks...

This surprises me. I'm not there all the time, but have been there a lot of times over the years, and never once felt threatened. It could be more interesting and I think the potential is there, but it has always felt clean and safe to me.

Same. I've never been to the Levee that I felt unsafe, and certainly never threatened.

I forgot, that is on top of the Newport Levee Security that already works there.

I was shocked too when a couple of the officers explained it to me.

90-95% of the time I went to the Levee for AMC theatres. With Wilder and Florence now being nicer and much closer I have little reason to head to Newport.

The last time I was there I was a minority and the majority were probably between 11-19. Just not a crowd I care to be around when they're lacking some much needed supervision.
