BEChargers Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 I have heard some conflicting information about Coach French the last couple of days. There has been a lot of talk about him heading to Middlesboro to take over and I've also heard that maybe he's retiring. There are a lot of people on this site that take shots at Larry and that's fine. That's part of being the head coach. I'll just say this, Larry has left every program he's been at better than they were when he got there. Southwestern was 1-9 the season before Larry arrived and 3-7 the season before that. Larry's record will stand at 47-17 while at SW with (3) 10 win seasons in that total. SW's has only had (4) 10 win season's in their 25 year history and Larry has 3 of them. If my numbers are correct that puts him tied at 6th all time with Mark Brown at Etown with 322 wins, 4 behind 5th place coach Sam Harp. I wish him nothing but the best whatever he ends up doing and thank him for his time at Boyle County.
Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 So what I saw was that he has asked Southwestern for some time off from coaching, and that school officials have stated that this was not an official resignation, correct?
FridayNightHeroes Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 (edited) Classy post. He is as good as there is in the business that’s for sure. A coach of high character that coaches and develops both players and his coaches. He will be an asset if he continues to coach wherever he is at. He will win ballgames wherever he is at- be a homerun at Middlesboro or Whitley. And if he choses to retire well then we’ll have to find someone to track him down on the water. He’s still one of the best in the business though that’s certain. Edited December 19, 2018 by Jumper_Dad R5

Told players and staff at a mtg today that he had resigned as Head Coach at the school. Think it's pretty official. I know what you are asking and it can be presented different ways. I understood these past two weeks that he was possibly heading to Middleboro but the comments today seem to indicate that maybe he was done coaching. Either way I'm pretty sure he is done at SW.
ChiefSmoke Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 One of the best things for me growing up was getting to have Coach French as my HS football coach. If he is finished, he sure has earned a happy retirement. If he moves on & coaches again, what a blessing to those kids and community. I am sure of this... if he does coach another year, whoever plays quarterback for him, will be much faster than the QB he had in 1982. And if you don't believe me, just ask Coach French!
ATLCat Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 I won't label French as an "elite" coach with some of the legends in our State who have racked up championship after championship. With that said, there is no denying that when French is your HC you are going to win a lot of games, make deep playoff runs, and do it almost every year. To me he is definitely one of the Top 15-20 coaches in KY and wherever he ends up will be better when he is on the sideline.
Shuttlesworth Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 WKYT reporting he is headed to Middlesboro. Interesting.
Jumper_Dad Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 I don't understand the lure of Middlesboro. Southwestern has all the resources he'd need to continue winning. Pulaski is always going to be in their way to advance but now Danville, LCA and Somerset will be in their way along with Bell County being just up the road.

Middlesboro will be in district 7 next year. Danville, LCA, and Somerset will be replaced with Breathitt, Knott, Leslie, and Morgan.

LethalPG Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 Coach has always known when it's "time to go". All you have to do is look at his track record.
HT721 Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 Middlesboro will go from a 1 win team to region champ next year.
FridayNightHeroes Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 Yes is agree. Given their schedule next year he can go anywhere for 6-4 to 10-0 in regular season and has a definite legit shot to make the regional finals or semis.
