My thoughts exactly. Kentucky has an awful lot going for them right now, including program success, in-state recruits, and out-of-state recruits. Louisville football is pretty significantly behind Kentucky in all of those areas right now.

 

Does Satterfield/Appalachian State have a strong recruiting game right now? I honestly have no idea.

 

 

That will all come crashing down this year and next.

 

Kentucky has the luck of a down year by some good programs and found some diamonds in the rough with recruits.

Satterfield is more successful than Kragthorpe ever was.

 

Krags was 29-22 at Tulsa before coming to Louisville. He won C-USA in 2005 (the first season after UofL, UC, and USF left for the Big East) with a 9-4 record and a Liberty Bowl win, but went 8-5 in 2006, his final season there.

 

Satterfield was 51-24 at App State and has won the Sun Belt three years in a row, going 10-3, 9-4, and 10-2 in those seasons. That overall record includes the transitional seasons from FCS into FBS in which he went 4-8 and 7-5 before going 11-2 in his third season. Furthermore, he's demonstrated himself capable of taking on teams with a much deeper pool of talent, coming within a hair of knocking off both Tennessee and Penn State in the last few seasons.

 

Ultimately we just can't know right now. You'd like to think that part of his pitch to Tyra was a plan for how he puts together a staff and how that staff works on both recruiting and day-to-day coaching. You'd like to think that Tyra was impressed with that plan and that's why he's being hired. Whether that plan comes to fruition or works out in the end... no way to really know.

I’ve got some ties to the Boone, North Carolina area so I’ve followed App.State for several years.

The guy seems to be a strong coach. As long as he can recruit at the ACC level, it should be a good fit.

He absolutely nailed his introductory press conference. Couldn’t have been better, IMO.

Coaching is half of it, he still has to find a way to stop Marrow from taking all of his city recruits. If he can do that he might be able to get something cooking.

Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program. Satterfield is starting from scratch in Louisville. But players across the state and especially recruits in Jefferson County are looking for a reason to go to Louisville and Petrino wasn’t giving them a reason to come. Hopefully Satterfield gives them a reason to come. I’d like to see Satterfield be successful and hope he does well.

I didn’t expect him as a hire but I think that he will be good. I don’t believe that coaching will be an issue. As far as recruiting goes, that’s going to be the biggest question of all IMO.

I agree. That’s two big hires now for Tyra that have at least done what they’re supposed to out of the gate.

 

Now comes the fun part. Watching him put together his staff is going to be interesting as it might give us some clues as to how he wants things to operate going forward.

If programs have had down years, that is not Kentucky's fault. Just like when Kentucky was down during the last 2 years of Joker and the first two years of Stoops. I am assuming you are alluding to Louisville and Tennessee. Not their fault UK was down. I think the Wildcats have recruited well enough and developed players well enough to avoid being 6-6 every year. Sometimes, injuries and other factors figure in, as well. I think they are at the point they can go 7-5 or 8-4 every year, that they don't fall off. We shall see.
