I was also surprised they extended Lovie’s contract. U of I has been one of the worst teams in one of the worst divisions in CFB. But I really hope he can turn things around in Champaign.

I was surprised Illinois extended Lovie Smith. I thought he may get axed.

 

12 million reasons why he got extended. Besides, he took over a dumpster fire, has the youngest roster in FBS, by design, and his record in his third year was just 1 less than Mark Stoops had in year 3. However, if he can't get them to at least 6 wins, next year, then they may revisit the extension.

Just two years ago Brian Kelly and Notre Dame only won 4 games and missed a bowl. 2 years later they are now playing in the playoffs.

 

True but in that particular season Notre Dame lost a ton of games by less than a touchdown and could have easily finished 8-4 or higher. The record was somewhat deceptive and the law of averages went against the Irish.

Seen where Malzahn might not be back at Auburn next season. Auburn supposedly met with Bob Stoops a while back to get him back in the coaching ranks.

That program seems like someplace that should be better than it has been. Should be able to recruit the same areas as Georgia, Clemson, etc. It's in a good conference with a path to the playoff. Will be interesting to see who puts their name in the hat.

Well yeah, but with Johnson gone, I'm assuming that the offense is going to change. Just seems to me like a school that should be able to find themselves in the top 25 more often than not.

Just two years before Johnson came on, Georgia Tech had Calvin Johnson leading the ACC in receptions. Things will likely change.

 

That said, part of me wants to see if they could possibly hire the Navy coach and see if they can keep running that option only do it even better. They're such a weird, quirky part of the ACC that I'll be sad to see go away.

Georgia Tech would be a complete rebuild if the new coach changes the offense. That team was recruited to run the option, it wouldn't be a quick switch.

I’m sure GT wants to rebrand the whole program. GT really should be better than they are. Great school, in a great city. Bring in a modern coach and the recruits will come. Like JD said, this is a job where you have to give 4 years for the new guy to bring in all his dudes. Hopefully you make a bowl game or 2 in those first 4 years but it will take lots of patience. You could just bring in another option guy, but you’re ceiling is just so low as an option team. You aren’t winning any championships running the option in 2018.
