Should teenagers be prohibited from buying phones with the ability to text?

Featured Replies

According to the below link 11 teens die every day as a result of texting and driving. 11 x 365 = 4015 teens dying every year as a result of texting and driving.

Texting and Driving Accident Statistics - Distracted Driving

Texting and driving is illegal in most places but that isn't stopping all the deaths.

11 deaths per day is like having a school shooting every day yet there is no outcry that I am aware of.

When are Verizon and Sprint and AT&T and all the other phone carriers going to take texting deaths serious with phones they sold?

Is 21 the right age for phones with the ability to text? Older?

I've wondered when this was going to be the next hot button national issue. Sadly it's not just kids either. Nine times out of ten, when you're behind someone driving erratically (speed, swerving, etc.), you'll find that the driver is texting.

How many were dying before cell phones? Give me a number from let say 1998 or something. Then we can talk.

Are kids still going to die in car accidents if we take away texting? The answer is yes.

So why would we take away texting?

I am amazed anyone of any age thinks they can safely text and drive at the same time.

True that. Last time I tried to text and drive I almost went off the road in 71. It was a miracle that I didn’t flip/wreck/die. I’ve been scared straight since.

Yep, some will die due to speeding, drinking or just plain bad driving...but if we can eliminate over 4000 per year dying just from texting, shouldn't something be done? It would take a Parkland size school shooting every other day for a year to equal the number of kids that die just from texting and driving each year.

If even one life is saved by not allowing teens with drivers licenses to own phones that text wouldn't the sacrifice be worth it?

I just praised you, and you had to go and give this answer? :idunno:

Rule 2

Why are we blaming texting. Obviously it is the driving that is the problem. Let's no longer let teenagers drive. Problem solved.

Less and less drive every day. I have three friends who have college aged kids that dont have their driver's license, baffles me.

This thread seems loaded with posters trying to play the other side :jump: I can’t get my head around it.

Phones should not work inside a moving car. Tech is out there.

Of course cars will be autonomous in 20 years and this will be a moot point.

What is the difference in talking on a phone vs talking with the people in the car?

If we can’t stop all teen driving deaths, we shouldn’t take away texting right? Does that line of thinking not translate here? :lol2:
