I work with many many millennials and I am the parent of two, both of whom have millennial s/O's. Not one of the millennials I personally know are as you describe. The type of people you describe are not primarily of any one generation.

I always find it funny that the ones that critize millennial the most are normally the ones that raised them.

We can't take all the credit, (Waddup Gen-X) but we pretty much ended hard copies of music and literature.

On another note, I do remember my grandmother telling me how much better things were in her day...simpler, more friendly, and wholesome. So, I hope I am alive and well enough to hear what millennials complain about to their childrens’ generation.

Such a bad take. Most millennials I know, which is a lot since I'm one, not only work a normal 8-5 corporate gig, they also have side hustles. In fact, I'd venture they work much harder than the previous generation who are too lazy to take on a side hustle, and put our country in insane amounts of debt.

I can only speak for my 4 boys. Ages 24-29.

 

They all went to college. Three went to 4-year and one went into trades.

 

All of them have decent jobs and live on their own.

 

Only one of them had any debt coming out of college. (~ $9000)

 

We didn't pay their ways (We did buy their books). They all earned scholarships and worked.

 

We kept everyone on our car insurance until they turned 26 and everyone on our medical until they turned 27. Still have two on our medical.

 

All of them have a work hard and get it done attitude, but that is what has always been expected of them.

 

I don't really know what the difference between a millennial and a gen-xer is.

 

The one thing that used to really bother me was the number of young folks around them that seemed to give up when things didn't work out cleanly. They had a whoa is me attitude instead of a I can do this attitude.

 

I work with several folks that complain about their kids not getting jobs, because they can't get the perfect job. On the other hand, I know there are lots out there like my sons that work whatever it takes to get by until the right job comes along. My oldest still bar-tends 3 nights a week because he wants a lifestyle that is more than a 3 year teacher makes.

 

 

I will say that most of the young folks I work with are good workers. They need a few more at-a-boys. Seem to have more of a need to be appreciated thing. That's not hard to deal with though.

Couldn't be farther from the truth. For one, a "side hustle" is to supplement the full time job. So that basically kills your entire argument. Secondly, I don't know one millennial with the mindset you just attepted to label them with. And even if I did, you gonna try to tell me there aren't people like that in every generation since the beginning of time?

The silent generation came home from World War II, built the greatest economic engine the world has ever seen, and the strong public institutions necessary to keep it running.

 

They handed the keys off to the Boomers, who promptly crashed it into the first bridge embankment they could find.

 

Thus far I haven’t been overly impressed with the GenXers attempts to right the ship.

 

You’ll forgive me if I’m less than impressed by grandstanding over Millenial malaise as those of us at the older end of that age group look at what lies ahead.

I was at my previous job for almost seven years (I'm 31), was in management, before taking my current position with a new company.

Honest question, when did it start as mainstream that you must get a student loan to go to college? I dont remember it being a big push to that when I went so I am curious.

 

Some of this is driven by most schools now forcing students to use their housing for the first two or three years if they are not local residents.

 

And housing and meal plans at public universities cost more than tuition and books.

No. Worked from my previous employer from 2006-2012 until they filed bankruptcy. I've been with my current employer since February 2012. I would've loved to retire from the previous company, but that wasn't an option.

 

I'm just saying, as you can't define everyone of one gender or race based on that fact alone, age should not be dissimilar. You don't know the factors that make up a person.
