What does Scott need to do to turn things around?

Featured Replies

I went back to Scott at the end. How can you change the mentality of an entire community???

So I guess you're saying it's a useless situation?

So I guess you're saying it's a useless situation?

I think it's the toughest situation in NKY...

I agree with that. But, don't discount how much open enrollment and Dixie's renovations have made the near impossible even worse. Compound that with the new district next year, and it's a really tough situation.

:thumb: I think you are absolutley correct.

The new district will be tough with Highlands, Cov Cath, Holmes, and Dixie. However, besides those tough games, next years schedule will be alot more relaxed than we've seen since we went to 4A four years ago. There will be more competitive games against teams more on their level (I'm not suppose to discuss the particulars of the schedule). Hopefully, this will give the kids an opportunity to be more competitive and at least have a shot at a winning season.

Open enrollment is the reason that Scott doesn't have a chance at changing the situation... If your a half way decent football player and want to win you go to Dixie....I also wonder if Holy Cross is getting some players that might of went to Scott in the past??? Just a guess I don't know ... I think it is a sad situation over in Taylor Mill............

OPEN ENROLLMENT!!!! If and when the Kenton County School System decides OPEN ENROLLMENT is a bad idea things may become equal for all! To this point Dixie has a new football facility and Simon Kenton has a makeover on there gym. I think they may have changed some of the light bulbs in the parking lot at Scott, so I guess if we can talk about things being equal Scott may be getting the short end of upgrading by just a little? Has anyone ever seen a someone from the other school(s) encourage kids not to attend Scott to play sports while in the halls of a school located right behind Scott? It is possible and probable.

Could OPEN ENROLLMENT cause another school to recruit kids? I think the answer is clear on how to solve the problems at Scott, 1)Take away OPEN ENROLLMENT, or 2)UPGRADE Scott's sports facilities equal to the other two schools in the district, or 3)GET BETTER at asking kids to attend Scott (the R word), than you may see better teams on the athletic teams at Scott. You the voting public in Taylor Mill could be the voice.

Don't care one way or the other, but I would think that maybe Dixie and SK might just feel that they have just gotten even with Scott HS. Seems to me, that Dixie and SK don't have swimming pools at their schools......nor a separate soccer field...nor until this year Dixie didn't even have a baseball field that was on or near campus.....and the gym at Dixie and SK were built in what 1937?........ Dixie didn't have what they have now years ago, so what was Scott's excuse then?? Remember don't care one way or the other but........

IMO facilities have nothing to do with it.

Its simply the open enrollment issue. Take that away and Scott football gets much better.

Does Dixie or Simon ever use the pool for practice or swim meets? It seems to me Coach Maxwell never had a problem with the baseball field and its location. Not sure on the exact dates of the gyms at Simon and Dixie, but with Scott being built at a later date it was due to need and only has 1 gym.

The one thing I agree with is that the kids must work harder to get better, but I think you are missing my point. The question first asked on this thread what is the problem now? If you feel that the recent upgrades to the other schools has not influenced kids not to attend Scott than that is the way you feel. With all 3 schools being located so close together any little change or upgrade will help influence the student athlete and effect the talent level now, not the past. With not having a deep knowledge of Scott High School, I think Scott may have been built in the late 70's or early 80's and I know that the athletic teams such as basketball and baseball were competative (not sure about football) could the reason for this be new and updated facilities? As I said just trying to answer the question for now not the past.

IMO facilities have nothing to do with it.

And yes I do agree that OPEN ENROLLMENT is the problem. It you look at my previous post OPEN ENROLLMENT was my main issue. The other issues were just contributions to the problem.

I've been around Scott forever and I can say this open enrollment is a big problem but you have to look past that because the board will not change that. you can talk til you are blue in the face but nothing will be done about it. There are kids in the school that should be playing football but choose not to because of the program it is sad because there really is talented kids walking the halls of Scott. If Scott can put some W's on the board you will see kids come out a good example is when we went to the playoffs a few years ago and we won our first playoff game only losing to the big H (Highlands) in the second round, if you looked at the numbers on that team compared to the next years team the numbers went through the roof. They need some wins and they need the kids next door to them (woodland middle school) to stay at Scott where they should be going instead of jumping ship to another Kenton County School.

Perceptions are everything with prospective student/athletes, and in particular young potential players - add in an open enrollment invitation to pick and choose where to play your career and a rapidly improving Holy Cross option at the bottom of the hill and you are inviting a "poor get poorer" scenerio which seems to be effectively taking its toll at Scott.

Ask all of those potential Scott Eagles football players who have gone to other Kenton County Schools or choose to walk the halls and not play on the Scott football team or have opted to play at Holy Cross why they didn't go to Scott or don't play on the team and the answer I think you will hear is - "They Suck!!!"

Not very flattering but a way of life - the desire to play for a winner.

Scott is not the only program that has had to overcome this - Campbell County is a prime example and closer to home - Simon Kenton. Until Campbell County hired John Schlarman and Troy Styer this program suffered from the same perception and the better athletes chose either not to play at all or to go elsewhere.

Schlarman and Styer are young, vibrant, and became visible. They didn't wait for the kids to come to them - they went to the kids. They beat the bushes within their own school, got involved with the Red Devils, started an in-house junior high flag football program, created a vision and let the kids feel valued and got them into sharing the dream. They developed some pride in the football program and in three years the program has gone from nothing to something. Something similar has to happen at Scott.

If the Scott football team is losing kids from their feeder school in the back yard - shame on them! If I were the football coach at Scott, I'd be eating my lunch everyday in the Woodland cafeteria, shaking some hands and "recruiting" my own kids.

I'm no longer familiar with the NKYFL as I once was, but I think that Dixie has the VFW Raiders and the Bengal Tigers that probably feed them. Does Taylor Mill still have a team?? If so the Scott coaching staff probably needs to move in with those kids, make them feel important and make it a personal thing about coming to play for them. Paint the picture - share the dream. Preach the "what we can do together" gospel and get them back to being proud to be associated with the Scott program again.

Since its been done in other sports there, it is inconceiveable that it can't be done in football. There is nothing at all wrong with the popularity of the sport - the problem is with the popularity of the sport at Scott.
