Coach Ray is not under any pressure to make that statement. He clearly enjoyed and loved his teams that won it all. Different eras are difficult to reconcile. If anyone is allowed to it’s Coach Ray.

Who from 87 went D1

Mike Woolf and Dave Legeay boy went D1 from 87 team.

Not sure if you would count the Ivy’s as D1. If so, Mike Wilson, Paul Hladon, Scott Spivey and Brian Williams were also part of the ‘87 team. I believe all lettered as well.

They were defintely the most Dominate team ever... I agree hard to compare teams from different era's, but I don't think it's arguable that they were so much better than anyone else in KY in 5A. With the exception of a Trinity team or two, or maybe a Highlands team (maybe), no High school team I can remember was as dominate... definitely no previous Covcath team. It was a fun year to watch!

 

A few Highlands teams and a lot of Trinity teams definitely were as dominant and against better competition too. CovCath's schedule wasn't easy, but it wasn't the toughest out there either IMO. IMO they only played one other top 10 team in the state of Ky. Now do I think they would have beat basically every team in the state besides Trinity and maybe St. X or Scott County yes. However IMO its hard to say they are one of the most dominant teams of all time in this state, when they didn't really play many of the top 10 teams in the state.

 

With that said, I do think this CovCath team was the best CovCath team ever. They were a great team no doubt.

Definitely best Cov Cath team ever. The schedule was the schedule. You play who's on it. They beat every team for the first time ever. That should really end the discussion.

 

But to further the point, to me, the teams that always stand out are the teams that physically impose their will on you. Inevitably, that usually means the faster the team plays in relation to its competition the more memorable the performance.

Fundamentally opposed to this whole “best ever” discussion. The ‘17 team was spectacular.

 

To say the ‘87 D couldn’t cover any of the ‘17 weapons is inaccurate. I’ll stop at that.

15 teams this year thought they could cover all of the weapons CovCath had out there. None of them could cover them. When you have multiple 6'4" and 6'5" receivers with speed to throw to at any level, it is difficult to stop. I don't think the '87 team would've been able to defend well against the '17 team. Evidently the head coach of the '87 team agrees with me

My point is being missed. Coach Ray called this the best team ever. He didn’t say the 87 D couldn’t cover ANY of the 17 skill guys.

 

No argument as to who the better team was. I just felt like the 87 D was being unfairly disregarded in a previous comment. That team had some length, speed and toughness in the defensive backfield.

 

Never would think they’d contain this offense entirely, but they wouldn’t run roughshod either.

 

And no, I was not a member of the 87 team.

 

Contrary to what maybe some believe, kids could run a little in the 80s, too. Completely different base defense (53). Completely different training, coaching philosophy, etc.

 

Congrats to the 17 team. Best ever.

 

And for the record, I don’t think the 87 team was the best of the state title teams before 17. But, that D could play a little.

1981 and 1982 teams were stout...had it not been for sub districts CovCath would have won one in 81 and a double overtime loss in 82 to perhaps one of Highlands greatest defensive teams kept them from easily going back to back

As far as "Non Trinity teams", I compare this year's CCH team, visually, with the Collinsworth Highlands teams and the Paducah Tighliman teams of '87, '88. Fun to watch and D1 talent that stood out everywhere.

 

I also think it is fair to put in perspective a few things about the CCH teams from '87, '88:

* '87, '88 Pad Tighlman teams were loaded with kids that "starred" at UK, UL, and Southern Cal / NY Jets, Mich St, etc. This team had all american (not state) speed... lost to CCH both years.

* Paul Hladon was a top 25 qb in the nation, offers from Stanford, Miami OH, other D1's and chose Princeton

* Mike Wolf and David Wilson were two top 5 CCH players all time, period.

* The '87 defense was as good as any team, period...again... Mike Wolf!

* The '88 team was the fastest CCH team with all state track speed at nose guard, end, both corners, and safety. Yes, tough to defend 6'5 but they weren't running past anyone, all 4 DB's had good college careers, and Jeff Ziegler caused many alligator arms.

* O line included Barry Jones (multi year starter at UK), and Mike Flesch was 3A all american and National O line man of year.

* The That's my Boy Award is named after Brian Williams, he was pretty good!

* Pick either year, 87 or 88, both years had D1 TE's and WR's playing with a D1 QB behind a great O line.

 

That said, I absolutely loved watching this years team. Couldn't be happier for them, but someone earlier asked for an argument... it's not a stretch of a comparison.
