Goodell made clear in the letter, obtained by ESPN's Adam Schefter, that he wants players to stand during the anthem. He did not provide specifics on how he intends to ensure it, but wrote that it would "include such elements as an in-season platform to promote the work of our players on these core issues." The issue will be discussed, and likely acted upon, during the NFL's regularly-scheduled fall meetings on Oct. 17-18. The NFL's current anthem policy states that players "should" stand for the anthem but stops short of requiring it. In the letter, Goodell said he wanted to end the controversy by agreeing on a uniform approach for all teams. "Like many of our fans," Goodell wrote, "we believe that everyone should stand for the national anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us. "We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues. The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues. We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players." The proposed new policy is the result of "many of discussions with clubs and players," Goodell added.

Everyone I know that has an issue with Kaepernick's protest feel he should not be protesting in any way (Shut up and play is the most common refrain). They also all share the same political leanings. So from my very own straw poll, admittedly small (less than 50), it appears I have at least some form of evidence to back up my hypothesis.

October 10, 20178 yr Just because we don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't take place. There are a number of organizations founded in inner cities designed solely to help this issue. We just don't hear about them because it's not as news worthy. We both knows who's responsible for this. We completely agree on the media.

October 10, 20178 yr Author Let them protest and sit out a game and do without a game check. Make their team forfeit a win, that will prove a point. Sunday, don't show up for game, let the sellout crowd see how serious they are.

Yes sir, wear pregame shirts protesting or make cleats to wear but stop disrespecting the flag that, hundreds of thousands of young men and women wear to work daily.

Indeed it is their 1st Amendment right and it is also the fans, the owners and whomever is contributing to the players paycheck right to protest also and it seems it is starting to hit the NFL in their hearts, that is their wallets! If anyone of us did something to hurt the business's bottom line that we work for, trust me, you wouldn't have a job for long and you can say it's your right and it is but not on the job site, if you want to keep your job!

October 11, 20178 yr They are protesting the social injustices they believe how blacks are being treated and mostly at the police brutality towards blacks and the court systems they believe will not prosecute LE. You probably knew that you just don't apparently agree, which of course, is fine. But so is their right to send their message legally. This is 100% not what they are doing this for. Spin it anyway you want, but this is far removed from any social injustices. This is 100% POTUS. The players who did not stand made their points. Now what are they doing? Bringing fans to hate them. Like it or not, fans, including myself dont want politics inserted into the one thing we can get away from all this political crap that goes on now. Like I said in another thread, kneeling wont change one thing as far as social injustices go. It had further divided our nation. Want to do something productive, get with leaders and address the issues not do something you know is going to make people mad. It has cost the NFL more than it will gain them. If they really want to make a stand, do what Ref says. Dont play. Lets see how many will lose the $$$ for a cause. You will see real quick where the heart is then.
