I know that Danville only played Mayfield from 1987 thru 2006 in semi state and state title games 10 times and won 9. (I think those are the only games the 2 have played) Danville was obviously very good during that time, but I think they played some pretty good Mayfield teams. I dont know if they own them or if it was just the blue flue.

 

I don't think Mayfield was ever intimated by Danville in that era. They played some epic games and Danville was very very good back in that era.

 

I don't think it is about intimidation, but never discount the mental side of things. Say in one of these classic Danville/Mayfield games a ball bounces a certain way for the Ads, or Mayfield turned over the football at an inopportune time, this may crawl in the back of these teams psyches and they begin to think "dang, it is happening again." A thought they may not have had in any normal game.

When Danville won 19 straight against Boyle there were some times when that very thing is what happened IMO.

 

When that streak started there were probably three games in four years that could have gone the other way for Boyle except for a mistake here and there. Then when the talent game widened it was never a contest until the early 90's. Boyle lost a couple of heart breakers before finally snapping the streak in 1996.

 

Sure a team's aura can be tough to overcome.

 

I would say that Beechwood has a problem historically with Mayfield. Have then ever beat the Cardinals?

My thinking........if the opposing team is an up and coming team, or a fairly strong team, a school name such as Bowling Green, Male, Belfry, Johnson Central, Scott County or Trinity will likely fire that opposing team up and they might even play better. If the opposing team is down and out (and they know if they are down and out), then yes, the school names mentioned before not only are intimidating but depressing.

When you see 100+ kids walk off the bus when your playing T or X, it's a little intimidating.

The answer is yes. In this case, doubt is the same as intimidation. When the likes of teams like X, T, and BG show up on your schedule doubt creeps into some teams heads and that right there allows them to get beat.

Reputation is a clear differentiator for the players and their competition. Ironically it's more beneficial when a historically strong program is "down." It can lift the players and undercut the competition during a year when talent may not be enough.

 

One of the truest measures of a program's success is the degree and gravitas of name recognition. And the intimidation factor is very real.

Only if a team is not mentally prepared for their opponent.

I like to call these "jersey" games.

Most definitely (in high school.) Some teams are beat before they even get off the bus just because of the school they are playing. For example, Boyle Co. has not been as talented of a team the last few years but they still manage to win a lot of games. I think the credit goes to great coaching, but I also think a lot of teams are immediately intimidated before kickoff, sampling because its, well.... BoCo
