BGP QOTD: What are your dad's sayings/jokes?

Featured Replies

You know what I mean...the things you heard your dad say a thousand times, whether or not it was really that funny.

"Never trust a fart"

When I was a kid, he used to get revved up like he was getting ready to curse then say something else. His most frequent was:

"God ... bless America!"

Most would get me kicked off BGP.

He was an Irish immigrant, oldest of six kids, became a US Marine in the South Pacific during WWII. He thought he was very funny, but most jokes were "colorful".....beans, beans, the musical fruit...the more you eat.... Also, he gave nicknames to any girl I ever brought home....ie. "stringy-haired blond, Rebecca of Sunnybrook, IDA sweet as apple cider"....I tried not to let him meet any girls I knew.

Children are to be seen, not heard.

Dad's most frequent joke when I was a kid is still one of my favorites.

"Hey look at those ducks up there! See how they fly in a 'v' shape? Look at it. One side is longer than the other. Do you know why that is?

... There's more ducks in that row."

"These guys are really bad coaches". At any sporting event at any level of play I've every attended with him.

The follow up was ...

"These guys are really bad officials/umps/refs". At any sporting event at any level of play I've every attended with him.

"Nothing good ever happens after midnight"

"Son, if you had a brain, you'd take it out and play with it."

My Dad was born in 1919, and one of the phrases that he used when either someone made an inaccurate comment, or was trying to pass off nonsense as fact was...

"Your rear is full of blue mud" ....

which of course is another way of saying...

"You're full of it", or other various ways to say that phrase...

Throughout my life I had never heard one other person say it the way my Dad did, nor did I ever know its origins or think to ask, so a couple years ago I googled it, and found only one reference to the phrase where apparently it was a popular sarcastic phrase back in the 1920's.
