ESPN has definitely moved ultra-left leaning and I think it's hurting them significantly. Vast majority of people who are their target audience don't want to hear their social justice opinions, they want sports and only sports.

I'm a millennial and I love cable television.

 

I'm somewhere between Gen X and Millenial (those early 80s birthdays complicate things). I cut cable more than a year ago. I'm far from the only one. We live in an era in which consumers are demanding TV when they want it and how they want it. Rather than try to get out ahead of that like some networks have, ESPN has pretended like the gravy train of the 1990s never ended. Leads us to days like yesterday.

Wrong about why ESPN is failing. The downfall of ESPN was predicted years ago. For all his talk about Caitlyn Jenner, Michael Sam and Colin Kaepernick there were plenty of people on camera at ESPN who weren't in favor of any of them. Plenty. And Stephen A has been very very critical of Colin Kaepernick so, no, I'm not buying this reasoning that the ESPN being political is their downfall.

 

Not trying to start an argument with you, but I don't think whether people at ESPN agreed with it or didn't agree with it is the premise that is being discussed. I think it is more the idea that it was being discussed in a political view, period, on these shows that turned people off. I know some of the shows did that for me. No matter what my beliefs on the matters were, I got tired of listening to the debates about it and not enough about sports itself.

 

On the other hand, I totally agree with you as well. I think both things played into the decline of ESPN, with the political views a distant second to the Smartphones, different TV platforms, etc. I think the immediate sports results are number one reason why ESPN is tanking, but I do think they lost a lot of viewers because of what they were, or were not covering.

So they're just supposed to ignore it? I mean, I understand doing that when there are streakers on the field, but this is different. If ESPN has any semblance left of journalistic values, they can't possibly ignore something of the magnitude of a former starting QB in the Super Bowl doing something like what Kaepernick did. The other networks would eat their lunch over it.

 

I don't think you ignore it, completely, but if I remember correctly CK was the primary focus of ESPN for almost a month and the others that decided to chime in with him.
