Lighted Backboard - Yes or No?

Featured Replies

Simple question stemming from the Bracken - Williamstown thread.

Does your school have a lighted backboard (for purposes of determining 0:00 remaining)? Yes or no.

Don't they have to?

I don't think so. Someone in the thread suggested that something on the order of 50% of schools had them.

At Warren Central, no. And unless I'm incorrect, Warren East is the only one in the entire 14th District that has one.

Bracken no

Robertson yes

Mason I think so

In my opinion for high schools the lighted backboard is just there for effect and makes it look more professional. However for college and NBA they can use this on instant replay by looking at ball's release and the light in the same frame, whereas in person it is difficult to have your central vision on the ball and your peripheral vison on the light.

It is better to look a the ball's release and listen for the horn to determine if the basket is good. Such as in baseball umpires look at the foot touching the base and listen for the sound of the ball hitting the glove and determine which was first when calling a runner out or safe.

It was also mentioned on that thread that the backboard lights up when the clock hits 0.0 which is incorrect. It lights up when ever the horn is blown. Which is why you will see it light up whenever someone subs in. I also looked up the cost which can go anywhere from $800 to $1,400.

Garrard County does and it is a very good thing. Definitely helps referees during end of quarter/half/game situations.

Which is why an official doesn't "listen" for the horn, but obtains and angle and watches the clock and release...there is a delay... and if for some reason, the auto horn is not set, you have a problem. Cannot rely on horn as the indicator.
