Bevin causes UofL Probation

Featured Replies

Gov. Bevin's political power play has caused the University of Louisville to be put on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the agency that accredits colleges and universities. The probation happened because Gov. Bevin replaced UofL's board without cause, Bevin forced the resignation of President Dr. Ramsey and because boards must be free from undue political or other external influence. Complete details of the the agency findings will be released next month (January, 2017).

Well I am sure a number of Kentuckians who voted for him have no problem with that. :lol2:

I was hoping for double probation with a guillotine nearby for the first one that screws up.

This is serious beyond politics. This affects the futures of thousands of people, the University's future and that's just the beginning. And there us absolutely nothing the University can do to rectify the situation themselves. That's abhorrant.

Should be reason for impeachment. I dislike U of L athletics as the next person but to hinder academics is criminal.

The thing I can't believe is Bevin acts like it isn't his fault and that it is nothing to be concerned about.

If the bolded were actually true, wouldnt those seats on the board be non government appointed? But yet they are.

The board is appointed by politicians aren't they. I don't understand what this group is saying. It smells of them not liking the party the Governor resides in.

What did Bevin do exactly?

The agency that does the accrediting is not a Kentucky group.

I believe the primary issue is the forced resignation of Dr. Ramsey by Gov. Bevin. The resignation of the President is done by the board and is not something the Governor is supposed to be involved with.

To answer Wireman, Bevin basically fired all the board and appointed a new board. Part of that move also included the Gov. forcing the resignation Dr. Ramsey.

Please explain how being placed on a one-year probation by an accreditation board affects the futures of thousands of people, the University's future, and whatever other dire consequences you see arising from this action. Is this not just an exercise in political hyperbole that will have zero impact on the futures of a single student seeking future employment?

This is much ado about nothing.

First the reasons for the probation aren't known, the full report hasn't been released yet.

The board that had been appointed by Steve Beshear was not in compliance with KY statute and those members had in fact donated MILLIONS of dollars to Democratic candidates. Maybe, just maybe that's the undue political influence the accreditation board was talking about. Bevin appointed a board that was in compliance with KY Statutes. Andy Beshear is basically defending a non-compliant board.

Maybe, just maybe Bevin is cleaning up a mess caused by decades of Democratic rule in Frankfort.

Maybe, just maybe the CJ is making a mountain out of a molehill because they have been complicit in creating that mess and their dozens of readers expect them to.

Maybe, just maybe Andy Beshear is trying cover the ineptitude and corruptness of his father's administration.

Let's call it like it is. Bevin appointed a board that is loyal to him. Like every other governor. Nothing has changed on that front.
