We were looking at some hand carved wooden animals at a kiosk in the middle of the mall. My wife was actually going to buy one and was deciding which one she wanted. My daughter was about 2 or so was sitting in a cart or stroller and reached out for a wooden frog...the clerk slapped her hand, hard enough to make her whimper. We were so shocked by his actions we just put down what we were going to buy and left. I'm sure some words were exchanged, but I can't recall them.

 

Even though I may have gotten arrested, I've regretted not punching that guy every minute since that day.

I'd say zero chance you'd have been arrested. He physically struck your child, any actions you took after that would seem to be "self-defense" I would think.

Either way I should have put him down on the spot.

Would I hit the "reset" button on some things? Oh yes, most definitely yes, on many, many things. But real regrets, only one. Never got to be a dad. That one still stings even after all these years.

Can't claim that one. But I'm now 1 for 3 in that department and won't that average get you in the Hall of Fame?

This is an interesting topic. I really have no big regrets. But I have a lot of "I wish I'd have done that better." I wish I would have spent more time with my children, yet they don't seem to have a problem with the time I did. I wish I would have gotten in on the ground floor of Fazoli's when approached, but I really didn't have 40K at the time or willing to borrow the $$ to maybe lose it. Mid 80's I think.

 

Not sure I have any regrets because I am blessed with great family, happy, and have been relatively healthy for someone that has made poor choices of what I have put in my body with food and cigs.

 

Regrets are hard for me to understand because I just have never looked back much. I take what is before me, deal with it, stay positive, and move on

I have regrets....many, many regrets....paths I should have taken, people I have hurt, grudges I allowed to destroy relationships, not being "present" enough at points in my life. But I have learned to manage the feelings and not let the regrets be what determines the future. I can't change the past, but I can shape my future with what I have learned.

I think my biggest regret was buying my 3rd car. It was my birthday and I was wanting to get a new car and had saved a little for a down payment. But it was a rainy day, my plans got cancelled and just was out window shopping and let myself get talked into buying an overpriced car. I was young and didn't have any credit, bought the first two cars for cash. So it was at a buy here pay here. i paid way more than it was worth and also had a high interest rate. I was working part time at UPS and after I pad my new car payment and now full coverage insurance, I only had about $200 left each month. Lived with my folks still but still was broke every week. I had the car about 2 months and the paint started peeling on the car, the gray GM paint issue from 80's GM cars (1988 Grand Am). Then the next month UPS went on strike, I missed a payment and they repoed the car.

That not only wrecked my credit, but also ended up paying for that car twice over. Got garnisheed at UPS. Thought I had it paid off, the payments stopped, turned out that was just the principal. They came back later and garnisheed me again for the interest. Years later my younger brother was helping me rebuild my credit and said it was a shame he wasn't a lawyer back then (he was about 5 when I bought that car), he could have solved it all for me. He did get it removed from my credit report. He is a bankruptcy lawyer.

After giving it some real thought, one of my only regrets in life is not serving in our military.

 

I am very happy with my life and had I joined, things may be very different, so its tough to say. However, when its all said and done, that may be it.

My first year of teaching I only brought home about $600 per month but I stupidly bought a new car and the monthly payments were 1/3 of my pay. I was 21 and just getting started in the real world, not thinking clearly. If I had it to do over I would have bought a nice used vehicle and driven it for several years and saved some money.

 

Another regret is about 5 years ago I let a slick talking door-to-door Kirby vacuum cleaner salesman dump one of his over-weight, over-rated products on me for a price of $1,800. I'll never buy like that again, but I do want another opportunity for a van load of Kirby sales people to stop by again so I can tell them exactly what I think of their overpriced product. I just hate getting conned because I'm usually a very skeptical person about most things and I allowed this guy to pull a fast one on me. I later got on line and read some comments about Kirby's and quickly learned that they will start out asking $2,400 then $2000, and finally give a price of $1,800 but "I'll probably lose my job if the company finds out about this". Several comments said they came down to $800 for them, each time saying they'd get fired for doing it, lol.

There's all kinds of vacuum's on the market much cheaper, easier to use, and just as good....or better. I still use my 20 year old Electrolux instead of the 2 ton Kirby!!

If anyone is interested in buying a Kirby and can bench press 400 pounds I have one (slightly used) for $700.

Had this very conversation with a buddy at work yesterday. I said sometimes regrets can change...what once wasn't a regret can become one, and what once was a regret can at some point no longer be a regret.

 

He said one regret he had was not serving. I said that's one that changed for me over the years. When I was in the service, at the time I would sometimes regret having joined. Now, that's no longer a regret, but actually a positive and I am now (and have been for years) glad and proud that I did serve.

I had a former neighbor and kind of a friend get a part time job selling Rainbow vacs a few years ago. Before he went on his first sales call, he asked if he could come over and practice on myself and my girlfriend. He told us we wasn't pitching a sale to us, just wanted to practice and get his routine down and make sure he didn't miss anything. I said sure, you can do that, we couldn't afford the vacuum anyway but would be happy to help him practice.

 

So, he comes over, does his pitch...took about 45 minutes or so I guess. Wraps it up...then asks if he can go ahead and write us up an order for one. I said dude, I told you when you asked to come over to practice we didn't want one and couldn't afford one if we did. He actually got pretty miffed and left in somewhat of a huff.:idunno: Left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Not that we were good friends by any stretch, more like acquaintances, but we seemed to be even less "friendly" after that.

Interesting thread. For me "regrets" and "mistakes" are not the same thing. Some of my mistakes I regret, and some I don't. My regrets, now that I put thought to it, are centered around decisions/actions of mine that hurt other people.

I regret some things that I said that maybe seemed harsh or hurt someone's feelings or painted me in a negative light. I guess we've all done that at one time or another. There's too much negative energy in the world. No need to contribute more.
