Just like every speeder, (way less than 1% of them actually get speeding tickets) doesn't get a ticket...every drug dealer can't be rounded up all at once. Have to build a legal case with evidence and willing testimony, those take time.

Agreed. So for me I'd rather they spend as much time as possible building those cases and cleaning the streets.

Let's pretend that the guy who got ticketed here drives past a police officer's car and discovers that the officer has been shot or wounded. He then proceeds to help the officer into his car and then exceeds the speed limit in driving him to the hospital.

 

Is he given a ticket in that situation?

I don't have a problem with police officers on the road. That ensures there is a police presence and is something I feel is needed for order. More often than not people fly right when they see the police.

I used to speed and still do to an extent, but I no longer drive 15 to 20+ mph over...I stick to 7 to 10 over. Why, because I got tired of getting pulled over.

 

There are spots on I-75 where everyone is used to seeing a State Trooper, even when he's not there traffic slows down to near the speed limit when they get to those areas. While they may no impact on your driving, they do slow some people down. If not for tickets, I'd honestly drive 90+ every time I was on the interstate.

The implication in your post read funny style. Not even sure why you went there with it.

 

When did they reduce it? As one who speeds often I love that the limit is 70 on the interstate in most states. I can handle 55 on state highways and 65 on some of the more wide open state highways. More often than not I'll stay 5-10mph over the limit.

 

As for the speed limit, the reduction was actually before our time. Not sure why I remembered it. They allowed it to increase in '87 which was in my time.

Was he caught speeding by a camera? If not, I've never heard of a ticket being issued several days later.

I'd argue that someone doing 80-90 in a 65 is a more focused driver than someone doing 60 in a 65.

 

But, you have to consider the position you (as a speeder) are putting other people in. For example, here's something that I have seen a lot on the interstate...

 

Car A (driving 70) comes up on a semi-truck (driving 60). There's nobody immediately in the vicinity in the passing lane, so Car A pulls over and starts passing the truck. Out of seemingly nowhere, Car B is on the rear bumper of Car A. The reason? Because Car B is driving 90!

 

I've seen some people (in Car A) suddenly jerk their vehicle over in front of the semi because of this, to try and get out of the way. This creates a chain reaction behind them, as the semi driver is now hitting his breaks because he's got no safety room in front of him. And the people that were slowly edging up on the semi from behind, now suddenly find themselves closing that distance at a much, much quicker rate.

 

I don't care how focused the other drivers can be, we're still talking about several thousands of pounds of metal travelling at a high rate of speed. No matter how good a driver you are, sometimes physics just takes over.

Absolutely this. Just last weekend we were headed home at like 9 or so at night and the truck in front of us was swerving all over the road. Barely able to stay in their lane, etc. They were going the speed limit. We got close enough to grab their license plate # and then sped around them. Much safer speeding to get away from them, then staying the speed limit and behind them.

And when the behavior is erratic from everyone on the road it gets very dangerous. I've been in the fast lane doing 75-80 and no one in sight and have someone come up behind me in the blink of an eye because they were flying. Imagine mixing in that with people doing 50-60 and semis. What a nightmare.

 

 

I somewhat agree with you overall point about the money grab. There is no way you will get me to believe it would be safer without speed limits.

I'm sorry but driving 90 mph, there's no way you are in complete control of your vehicle and not putting those around you at risk.

I 100% agree that it's a revenue producer.

I drive by those same rules of driving. Especially #1 and #2. I also guarantee that if I am speeding I am focused on the road and others around me. When I am doing the speed limit or less I am more apt to be distracted by my phone.

 

Distracted driving is the number one cause of accidents. Speeding is next, followed by alcohol.
