Beatty came in and really changed the game. It started a bit in that year under Kevin Wright, but not like what was to come.

 

Prior to his arrival, Trinity and St. X were already dominating the big school landscape in Kentucky (though not to the recent extent) but they were doing so in that very old-school fashion exemplified by the 1997 4A Championship game in which Trinity and St. Xavier battled to a stalemate apart from a Trinity mistake that led to a field goal. X won that game 3-0. To my mind, it really encapsulated big-school football at the time and certainly summed up the way Trinity and St. Xavier played the game.

 

Beatty really brought the modern offense that has come to define Trinity football in this century and that has been so unstoppable in some seasons. It'll be tough to find a guy that can really alter the landscape in that way. He might be able to keep it going, but without the next big leap ahead, you're really just waiting on everyone to catch up.

I think they will be able to keep it successful, it would be hard for anybody to duplicate the success they have had.

Exactly. There will be some down years, after Lampley retired from coaching Trinity became beatable in a way we haven't really seen during the Beatty era. We could see a degree of that and at that point a level of dominance by some schools that have been waiting in the wings.

 

Who knows, maybe then SK will score on Trinity finally. :walk:

I would think current Trinity OC Andrew Coverdale would be seriously considered for the head coaching job if Beatty were to leave.

Beatty is one heck of a coach, and I hope he stays for quite some time. Trinity's trajectory really depends on who they would hire. We have the profile, resources, and renown to attract high-level coaches, but you can never really tell until until a guy is in the school and working with the players how he will turn out.

 

The momentum and support will keep Trinity afloat with pretty much anyone good enough that we would consider hiring, but whether they have Beatty's level of success or a moderate amount of success will really depend on who gets the job and how they fit in.

The tough fact of life with all teacher/coaches at Diocesean schools is the retirement programs historically were dramatically subsrandard to public schools. Made it hard to keep quality coaches longterm. Don't know if the retirements have improved. Can anybody knowledgeably speak to this.

Beatty was able to change so much x and o wise, culture wise, the admission policies of the school are even different now than when he arrived (don't know if that was influenced by him or not). They are doing so many things at a high level right now whomever they hire cant do much to improve it.

The bolded just isn't true. Since opening in 1953 Trinity has worked very hard to enroll students with a very diverse set of academic talents. That hasn't changed in 63 years.

 

Coach Beatty is a very talented coach and has brought the team to great success. That said, Trinity was good before and will be good after. My guess is that even Coach Beatty won't have quite the level of success we have all enjoyed over the past 15 years. After all, people catch up. Trinity will continue to be Kentucky's top program, just as it has been since 1968.

Seriously, T is going to remain at the top of the food chain. Everything necessary to sustain a top program is in place and they will be able to attract the best of the best in high school coaches when the time comes.

I don't see Specht leaving X for Trinity. He's an X guy and in my opinion, at a program with the same profile and resources.

Agreed - just by sheer population density and the massive alumni base. In my opinion Specht only leaves for a college opportunity or a big time National HS program, ala Bishop Gorman, etc. Just my opinion and nothing against Trinity.

I've been thinking about this recently. With other traditional powers having changed coaches in the past couple years and seeing a decline in success, what will Trinity do post-Beatty? I think it's a forgone conclusion that the next coach will have a pretty difficult, if not impossible time duplicating or continuing the success Beatty has had. How much of it is the players Trinity has to choose from versus the coach? We've already seen schools like Male close the gap, and St. X is usually right there as well. When Beatty leaves, is it blood in the water for 6A?

 

I lean towards continued success for Trinity, but I don't see them continuing the dominance they have had over the state in recent memory. I think they will always have the horses, but I do think that Beatty has a lot to do with the success there.

 

Hard to fathom T not continuing the tradition of excellence. The brand sells and you can set your watch by the fact that they'll find an excellent replacement, inside or out. The beat will go on.
