Might have been better to have made this trip some other time than right before Memorial Day.

Some outlets made note of "Death from the sky." comment.

Unlimited war is nasty.

The February 1945 Dresden, Germany raids were probably worse than that A-bomb attacks in terms of targeting civilians.

The raids was staggered into waves timed to catch the rescuers and general population out in the open after the initial raids. And they were done to intentionally create a firestorm.

If Dresden was on the apology tour that would be OK. It was destroyed just to show the world that conventional bombing could destroy a city and wipe out its population. It did not end the war in Europe. It was for demonstration only.

We owe Japan no apology. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a sneaky attack during peace time. At both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we dropped thousands of leaflets from airplanes to tell the Japanese civilians that we would do the bombing. First bomb was dropped and the Emperor would not surrender, so the second bomb was dropped. A terrible loss of life, not to be taken lightly. Only then did the surrender come from the Emperor. Countless Allied military lives and also Japanese were saved because we did not have to invade the mainland. My Dad with 5 children would have been called up in the next wave of the draft. It was a desperate time in history. Also, the massive bombing of the Dresden Germany manufacturing center did not end the war in Europe but it brought the surrender more quickly.

I don't see anyone on here citing that we should apologize for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I also don't think the President did.

It's amazed me how much social media tried to paint the speech as an apology. It wasn't. It was compassionate but, as Lincoln said once, "firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right."

Of all the problems I have with this president, this is not one of them.

The flags of their fathers - CBS News

The link is a related story I just watched on CBS Sunday Morning. The story on the show was better, but the connection is still there: The human need for closure and compassion outlives hate.

The fact that he is in Japan and not in Arlington during Memorial Day says all you need to hear.

POTUS returned to the US late Friday.

Looks like he made it back in plenty of time. At least by my calendar.

He didn't apologize and I felt he handled the situation as well as it could be handled under tough circumstances of walking a fine line. They are allies.

About as fair an assessment as can be made.

It's as if the President is capable of multitasking and keeping a schedule.

Agree.

I'm sorry but it I can't find anything wrong then there probably isn't.

I Do hate the bombs killed so many innocent

Watch white light black rain as a documentary and you will understand the horror so many kids suffered.

It's as if the President is capable of multitasking and keeping a schedule.

I've said it before and it bears repeating.

We see and hear what we want to see and hear.

A big Amen to that, brother.

Rather historic speech, I felt. Kind of surprised a President has not returned before now.
