May 4, 201610 yr I really don't need to be translucent at all. I daresay that if the other leaders in the South held Jefferson's views on the wickedness of the slave trade and gradual emancipation we may not have been in that terrible place some 80 years after independence. There's no doubt that Jefferson and many other founding fathers had a troubling history with slaves that seemed at odds with their ideals about the fundamental equality of men a free republic and government of the people, but their writings and the things they fought for became the fundamental basis that led to a massive movement to destroy that institution once and for all. And by the 1850s those writings formed the basis of an idea whose time had come. If we can't differentiate between the highest ideals of free government as laid out by founding fathers with an admittedly cloudy past and those men who would rebel against those principles in order to ensure continued political and economic predominance, well then I don't know where we are.
May 4, 201610 yr Stay - As a descendent of a Confederate from the 12TH KY Mounted Cav. I take pride in such monuments. Despite what many think in his reasons, I will point out that he was a non slave holder and son of a local preacher. The reasons many of these Kentuckians and Southern men fought are often complex. I also love the Confederate flag but I do not think it has a place on government property but it does have a place and meaning to me.
May 4, 201610 yr Stay. History is history. You would think so, but the new history texts coming out of Texas have whitewashed the Civil War and slavery. We had a thread on it a while back, but I'm not sure of the title, so I couldn't find it.
May 5, 201610 yr The editor of the Courier Journal (then the Louisville Journal) was a staunch supporter of the Know-Nothings in the 1800s and actually had a hand in inciting the Bloody Monday riots that resulted in the injury and deaths of Louisville Catholics. The same editor (George Prentiss, Google him) published anti-Union and anti-Emacipation editorials during the Civil War. Guess that means we should close the CJ (Although some would argue they're doing a good job of that on their own) because of their history of supporting hatred.
May 5, 201610 yr While it doesn't bother me one way or the other, I question why anyone would want a statue commemorating such a despicable part of our country's history on public display.
May 5, 201610 yr While it doesn't bother me one way or the other, I question why anyone would want a statue commemorating such a despicable part of our country's history on public display. I personally wouldn't want it. I agree with you. My only point was I could understand people who had direct descendants who may feel differently. You could destroy every confederate statue and rebel flag and I wouldn't lose any sleep.
May 5, 201610 yr While it doesn't bother me one way or the other, I question why anyone would want a statue commemorating such a despicable part of our country's history on public display. .... and I agree with you. Why the need for a statue in the 21st century commemorating a terrible blight on our nation's history? Expunge all vestiges of the Confederacy, once and for all.

Expunge all vestiges of the Confederacy, once and for all. What does this do? I understand flags on state capitols. To what extent Sci Fri? Remove the statues and take them to a museum or battlefield? Are we going to dig up confederate bodies like last year and place them somewhere else? I ask this because at what point does it all become whitewashing history?

Expunge all vestiges of the Confederacy, once and for all. If thats the case we should get rid of all WWII monuments as well. After all we did drop to Nukes and kill millions.

Because that is where we are as a society today. We only see what we want to see that is good. If its bad, we have to make it disappear so its forgotten about.

We are a better country and people now because it happened. You can't go around the world blowing up everything that has a bad memory associated with it. Many people need to grow tougher skin or there's going to be a Vagisil shortage soon.

AND HILARIOUS!!
