Black Student Threatened with Lynching by Lexington Catholic High School Teammate

Featured Replies

Mid-stream, the name of the text conversation was changed by this teammate and re-titled “Damarco I’m gonna lynch you’’.

The bully said these things in the group text:

“Damarco lynch means I’m gonna hang you bc you’re black and I just might’’

“your mom is on an episode of Maury bc u don’t know your real dad’’

“I don’t care if you steal it or sell crack just get the f***ing money’’ (ACTUAL THREAT AS WRITTEN IN THE ARTICLE)

“damarco I’ll hire you to pick my cotton $1 per week’’

“turn in your welfare check; Food stamps accepted’’

A Police report against the bullying student has been filed. Detectives came to Denisha’s home, collected statements and evidence including her son’s laptop. The police report obtained for this story notes that the text messages where received as evidence.

This is being investigated as a hate crime. Lexington Police Detectives are expected to make contact with the accused students parents this week to cite him and give him a court date. Once cited, Lexington Catholic will be informed of the investigation by law enforcement.

Denisha believes the bully who made the racist statements only received an in-school suspension.

The 2015-15 Lexington Catholic HS student handbook lists, “Written or verbal assault/threat made against any student, faculty, or administrative member of Lexington Catholic High School’’ as an offense that warrants expulsion.

Lexington Catholic officials have refused to give specifics on how the student was disciplined but Vice Principal Jonathan Kincheloe did confirm the offending student was still enrolled. When asked, Kincheloe said “he did not feel comfortable’’ making a statement of zero tolerance for this type of behavior.

Pictures from the accused teens Instagram social media account show the teen aiming a large assault rifle type fire arm and in a separate photo there is a pickup truck with a large confederate flag flying from the back of the flat bed.

Denisha said that she’d never heard anything negative about Lexington Catholic High School and was warmly welcomed when she arranged for a visit after her brother relayed that the football coach was interested in her son.

DaMarco’s uncle Devin Neal said, “I got a call from Mark Perry, the football coach. I didn’t know him, never met him. He called to ask about the boys and when we were going to bring them to the school.’’ Devin knew the coach was referring to his nephew Demarco and his own son who is a year younger. Devin is a known youth football coach for several leagues around town.

Denisha called Lexington Catholic and scheduled a time for a tour but was called back and told that the coach wanted to be there so she took another date. “The lady on the phone sound really excited when she called back. I was really impressed that the coach knew who my son was and he made me feel he was really welcoming him.’’

Additionally, the football coach may have violated rules by contacting DaMarco’s uncle about him attending the school. In the “Athletic Matters’’ section of the handbook it states “no staff member shall contact a student athlete outside of the feeder system of schools in accordance with KHSAA Bylaw 10.’’

Earlene Neal, DaMarco’s grandmother is appalled by the lack of response. “I’m highly upset. I’ve been with Fayette County Public Schools for 24 years. We would’ve done something.’’

Which issue do we think LC is more concerned with?

Very sad. I'm sure the kid felt in his mind like he was cool and funny. But that's not the case.

Since they have already punished the alleged perpetrator you would have to think the Knights are more concerned with the potential Bylaw 10 Violations.

Hopefully the investigation will be thorough. I think Lexington Catholic powers that be, The Lexington Fayette Police, and the KHSAA need to interview every minority in the school and ask them about racism, bullying, and how they ended up at LexCath.

If we are to believe everything that is published in this article and if the KHSAA does a real investigation here I would think the Death Penalty would be on the table for Lexington Catholic High School if the KHSAA finds evidence of 'more' Bylaw 16 violations and/or other Bylaw violations by Lexington Catholic.

This is very intriguing. I know myself that I am guilty of some extremely off color remarks amongst friends that are both white and black. According to this story mom found the things on the computer and was disturbed and put off by what she saw. As she should have been. I know how my parents would have reacted had this been me when I was in high school and truthfully it's probably a good thing they didn't know about some of the things said amongst classmates when I was in school. I don't want to say this is normal behavior but things like this happen everywhere and while it is troubling I can't help but wonder how troubled by it the student was. Was it an issue before his mom found it or did it become an issue after she found it?

I know I am rambling but when I think of my experiences in high school at Bowling Green High School I was just as guilty in off color racial remarks as my classmates were. We just never got caught and we left no evidence of it.

And no, I'm not saying any of it is right or excusing any of it. I just wonder how much of this is regular back and forth dialogue. If the kid truly felt tormented I can't imagine why he didn't or wouldn't have discussed it with the many other black students at LexCath and why they wouldn't have addressed it sooner.

The possible bylaw violation adds to an already intriguing story.

You'd think Lex Cath would take more action than sending someone to ISS for something like this, which is hardly any punishment at all. You'd think, but I guess you'd be wrong it appears.

I'm interested in what anyone from LexCath has to say about this and any insight they may have.

I feel like this story gives LexCath haters their "I told you so moment".

Great Point...Was this just banter back and forth or was it something more. I've heard much worse than this going back and forth between to buddies. I wonder also was this a real issue before Mom found it.

Does this explain the transfer of their QB to a school in Florida?

Was he aware of possible KHSAA problems on the horizon?

This is very intriguing. I know myself that I am guilty of some extremely off color remarks amongst friends that are both white and black.

I believe at least some of us can probably say the same thing, r similar. I know I have made very "off color" remarks/jokes to black friends that I would have NEVER said to a black person I didn't know or wasn't friends with. And the same goes the other way, they would say stuff to me that they wouldn't say to another white person they didn't know or wasn't friends with. May not be PC to do that now, but it's how guys would rib each other or give each other a hard time amongst friends, and it was always done in a "guys joking with guys" way. Heck, some of the conversations black/white buddies would have when I was in the service giving each other a hard time would be rated X if videoed and shown on a movie screen. So I know exactly what you are talking about. However, it appears to me this isn't the case here, this seems to me to be directed more to intimidate or threaten/bully. I could be wrong though.

Lexington Catholic handled this very poorly and chose to protect the wrong person, kids shouldn't have to put up with that kind of crap. I hope the KHSAA comes down hard on them as well.

A hate crime. Seriously. There are worse things being said and done that don't get labeled as a hate crime.

Kick the kid out of school, make him do community service in an inner city neighborhood with a black mentor and move on.

If the kid was an 8th grader, is it still a bylaw 16 violation? I have seen mail outs from private schools in Louisville to kids 100 miles away when they are in the 8th grade.

Mtn Ref, what if the text said "I'm going to KILL you!??" Community service?
