Louisville self imposes more sanctions

Featured Replies

I agree. If they really wanted to do something that would carry weight with the NCAA, they need to show Pitino the door IMO. The postseason ban they just had and the ousting of the HC should be plenty IMO.

I'm not sure firing Pitino makes a difference either, to be honest.

So how does this compare to the debacle of the UK fiasco in the late 80's?

Cats got two years of probation, reduction in scholarships, tv ban, and their NCAA record from 1988 expunged.

Is UL on the same level as the Eric Maunal/ and Sean Mills payola scandal?

It appears to me that UL is doing everything that they can in hopes that it will prevent the NCAA from handing down another year on the postseason ban.

While keeping Rick.

The third rail you can never touch when dealing with the NCAA is amateurism. Anytime you're accused of anything that looks like paying players for play is when they come down the hardest.

Rick Pitino still has a job because it's better to have him sit there through all the punishments, instead of buying out his contract and letting him go coach in the NBA or become an analyst on TV and keep working. Also, a lot of coaches would want the Louisville job, but would Louisville (in particular the fans) be patient with new coach they replace Pitino with? That coach would have a ton to clean up and deal with

If you are UofL why would you impose any sanctions? Why not follow the UNC model and deny/deny/deny....Even if there is proof, deny any knowledge?

How in the hell does Pitino still have a job?

As I have said before, it is college basketball. College basketball coaches at that level are practically untouchable. They are the main attraction. College football is more about the program.

How close do the Hooker Parties come to "pay for play?"

By the same token, the NCAA will never lay the hammer down on any big-name program like that again. TBTF — it's not in the NCAA's best interest ($$$$) to be taking prestige programs off TV and out of the tourney for lengthy periods.

NCAA tourney contract is signed for next 15 years. That money is already coming...UofL isn't so big of a draw ( I doubt anyone is) that TV would balk at them being off TV for a year or even two. The rest of the ACC would be ticked that the games against the Cards wouldn't be televised...but those contracts are already signed also, the money is coming to NCAA and ACC regardless what happens to the Cards or any other team.

If they are counting on what Chuck Smrt is telling them, any further sanctions means, IMO, they should have just left it alone. Who is to say ANY of this is going to make a difference to the NCAA? What if they double every thing UofL has already imposed?

I don't think they will. I think a lot more has been happening behind closed doors and UofL and the NCAA have been working together on this for some time. UofL is going to self-impose all the program-wide penalties the NCAA wants. They've already done it. But the NCAA is going to save one penalty for itself because it wants to have at least some show of strength for its enforcement arm: a middling-length suspension of Rick Pitino. I'd guess 12-15 games. Then some sort of probationary measure to ensure strict compliance for X number of seasons.

Just a theory. Could be wrong.

The Louisville TV market far and away outperforms any other market when it comes to college basketball. Stop playing the little brother game. It's OK to admit UofL is a pretty big deal as well.

A large part of that is KY fans as well. Maybe not a majority but a large part.

But his point is a fair one with the long term deals set in place no one program is going to hurt the NCAA being off TV.
