Louisville self imposes more sanctions

Featured Replies

The Louisville TV market far and away outperforms any other market when it comes to college basketball. Stop playing the little brother game. It's OK to admit UofL is a pretty big deal as well.

NCAA doesn't get paid off of "Louisville Market" they get paid from National contract with networks. That's why TV Money will not be an issue either way in what happens to the Cards.

I'm not playing any game...I don't think TV revenue would be considered in not punishing any team.

One question, how do you pronounce Smrt?

Do you not understand how ratings work? And how they play into the amount of money networks are willing to pay for broadcast rights to games, based on the amount they are able to charge advertisers in big markets?

Yes, do you not realize the NCAA tourney TV contract has already been signed for the next 15 years and one or two years of ANY team missing won't impact the NCAA's money they have already signed a contract for 1 penny.

As far as "Big Markets" go, Louisville the 48th to 50th largest TV market in the country. They are a huge College Basketball market, but how much of that market is watching teams other than Louisville. I'd guess a fair amount of the college basketball ratings in the Market come from viewers watching UK and IU as well as UofL.

Maybe in 15 years when the new TV deal is signed the networks will point to lost revenue during a TV ban of this team or another...but the NCAA will just look at competing offers from Fox, ESPN/ABC, NBC or BGPTV.

Selling ads may impact the networks $$$ short term (but not the NCAA $$$), but this will be well forgotten by the time the next negotiation comes up in over a decade from now.

FWIW I don't see UofL or UNC or any school losing TV in this day and age, mostly because of the impact it would have on their opponents not the impact that it would have on them.

Do you realize you just spent four paragraphs dismissing UofL's impact on the TV market, then came back around and agreed with me on the last one?

In the last paragraph we may agree but it's for different reasons.

You initially said the NCAA wouldn't punish them with a loss of TV because of losing TV money...I think they won't get punished with a loss of TV because now most teams have every game on TV and their fans expect to see them. Not fair to punish NC STATE or Duke fans by not letting them watch the local team because the Louisville basketball team is punished. Has nothing to do with money and even if money was a consideration, the NCAA doesn't care because they already have theirs in the bank.

Rick Pitino still has a job because it's better to have him sit there through all the punishments, instead of buying out his contract and letting him go coach in the NBA or become an analyst on TV and keep working. Also, a lot of coaches would want the Louisville job, but would Louisville (in particular the fans) be patient with new coach they replace Pitino with? That coach would have a ton to clean up and deal with

While Louisville is an appealing job for a lot of coaches. It is certainly much less appealing when an interested coach doesn't know what kind of punishment the school could face. Even if Louisville and Pitino part ways it may not be until after the NCAA announced their punishment etc.

The third rail you can never touch when dealing with the NCAA is amateurism. Anytime you're accused of anything that looks like paying players for play is when they come down the hardest.

Except when we call it something else, like full cost of attendance?

Which is one of the reasons Pitino won't leave unless they fire him. He will ride out the sanctions.

If you are UofL why would you impose any sanctions? Why not follow the UNC model and deny/deny/deny....Even if there is proof, deny any knowledge?

Understand your point. Never so happy to see Villanova defeat the NC hypocrites for the championship crown. An NC victory would have reinforced their deny, deny, deny approach. The North Carolina way has been dismantled as "the correct and honorable way", forever. IMO, glad Louisville is trying to salvage some degree of future integrity, rather than surrendering it permanently.

Kudos for UofL trying to get out in front of the penalties.

In reality they aren't giving up much are they?

Everything they announced yesterday would have been levied by the NCAA, more than likely. To your point, no, they aren't.

Hopefully for Louisville taking them now or sooner, helps them get past this sooner rather than later.

If Matt Jones was accurate on the radio this morning...things are about to get really interesting.

Care to elaborate?
