Fact checking the Hillary Clinton email controversy

Featured Replies

It’s been one year since it was learned that Hillary Clinton had set up a private email system when she was secretary of state — a revelation that has dogged her campaign for the presidency.

The Fact Checker has run 10 fact checks on the issue, mostly regarding dubious statements that Clinton had made to defend her actions. (We also had one fact check each on the Democratic spin and the Republican spin on the issue.) Reviewing our conclusions again, it appears Clinton often used highly technical language to obscure the salient fact that her private email setup was highly unusual and flouted existing regulations.

As always, The Fact Checker welcomes suggestions from readers for additional claims on the email controversy to fact check.

Clinton earned a lot of Pinocchios according to the author.

Imagine that.

She keeps saying there was nothing 'classified' was sent, received or on the server.

The problem with that term when used it statements - its meaningless. 'Classified' is not a secrecy designation used.

  1. TOP SECRET – Will be applied to information in which the unauthorized disclosure could reasonably be expected to cause exceptionally grave damage to the national security.
  2. SECRET – Will be applied to information in which the unauthorized disclosure could reasonably be expected to cause serious damage to the national security.
  3. CONFIDENTIAL – Will be applied to information in which the unauthorized disclosure could reasonably be expected to cause damage to the national security.

Mis-handling 'Confidential' material in corporate world will usually get you fired.

They are arguing if 'Top Secret' information was involved. Seems that mis-handling 'Confidential' (where unauthorized access could cause damage) and 'Secret' (where unauthorized access could cause serious damage) are unimportant. It seems serious is not so serious.

Sharing confidential material in the corporate world can not only get you fired but often it can lead to lawsuits.

"GRAVE damage"?

"GRAVE damage"?

"What difference does it make?"

"GRAVE damage"?

well played. you win one internet today.

"GRAVE damage"?

"Is there any other kind?"

Did I see in the debate where The Hill actually told the questionnaire who ask her about this; "That question is ridiculous, I am not answering it...many people in my position before have created these personal accounts as well."

Watching Hillary in DEbates infuriates me more than watching Trump. Trump goes out of his way to get under others skin and be "non politically correct", and people are calling his tactics bullying.

Hillary is much more of a bully with her passive aggressive approaches to questions and people who question her. If a debate format would put her on the spot like they did Trump a few days ago, I think she would come unglued.

BTW I am not a Trump supporter...Go Kasich!

I love that stuff!

If Trump could shoot somebody and still get votes, there's no telling what Hillary could do and still win the nomination and GE. She is Gaia to the girl power lefties.

That's not quite right. All three of those designations listed are considered "classified." They each describe which level - or class - the information belongs to. Information outside of any of those security designations (and there are others) is unclassified.

I don't doubt that Clinton is parsing this like a lawyer, but her usage of "classified" versus, say, "confidential" wouldn't hold any water.

Of all the candidates Clinton is the worst, way worse even than the socialist( did I just say that?) Bernie. Clinton is a crook, and a lying crook at that.
