Erin Andrews Awarded $55M

Featured Replies

This is truly an extraordinary verdict. It is the third largest personal injury verdict in the history of Tennessee. And the larger ones involved dead people who died horrific deaths. Many . . .many much smaller verdicts were returned for plaintiffs who died horrifically or who otherwise were maimed and seriously injured. And those plaintiffs, who took a lot loss, didn’t suffer the emotional suffering of Ms. Andrews, but paralyzing and disabling injuries. It will be interesting to see if the Marriott franchisee moves for remittitur relief.

Men marginalizing the amount of damage done to a woman. It's happened throughout human history and continues today. How do you know that $55 mil is too much? Joe and Mika said this morning that she deserved what she got and probably more. Why are they wrong ?

Would Ms Lucy Q Female have been awarded 55 million? Or is that amount only reserved for celebrity?

My guess would be the ordinary female citizen would be lucky to get $500,000.

I agree that she should be awarded something because what this man did to her was a traumatic experience. But unless it damaged her career to where she was unable to continue her work and be financially comfortable, I can't see awarding her 55 million dollars. The average person wouldn't have been awarded a fraction of that amount.

Is the value of an image/video of an average women worth the same as a public figure? No. Thats why magazines pay tons of money for the first picture of celebrities' kids. Thats why a celebrities' sex tape is so valuable to certain companies.

We might not like it. But her naked image is worth well more than Lucy Q.

This verdict is absolutely ridiculous, I better leave it at that

If you didn't like the Erin Andrews verdict and award, you're really not going to like Hulk Hogans? $115 million before punitive damages. May get close to 1/2 billion dollars.

I wonder how much money Gawker has?

Hopefully what these two verdicts accomplish is that some will think about it before posting stolen videos like these.

And the funny thing is, in order for Gawker to appeal they must put down a bond in full for the damages that was ruled against the. However I did read that the there is a limit and thus is capped at $50-55 million for the appeal to proceed. Still a lot of money either way.

I agree however, I can't really compare these two stories equally. Andrews was in her hotel room and assumed her right to privacy was secure; Hogan is in his best buddy's bedroom having sex with his best buddy's wife. He had to know that Bubba sometimes filmed his wife having sex with other men. He was just stupid.

No they aren't comparable except for the privacy violation. I honestly didn't think Hogan would win.

If you heard some of the think Gawker employees said on the stand , as well as the defense's explanation I thought for sure Hogan was going to win. Hogan's lawyers were very good, they made Gawker's legal team look like amateurs

I didn't follow the case closely just knew the loose facts as to what had happened.

Just like the O.J. case, a great lawyer will bury an average lawyer when it gets to a jury trial. Same could be said of the attorneys in the Travon Martin case, defense attorney was magnitudes better than the prosecution and were able to get Zimmerman off.
