My son almost made me cry tonight

Little backstory...my son (age 13) has played baseball for the past few years. He is toward the bottom of level of the talent pool, but likes the game. Each season has been very similar...new team, very little experience, and blowouts for most of the games. Last year, he at least had 3 kids and a head coach who he had played with/for the year before. It was still a frustrating year, nonetheless, as the team won only 1 game.

Our top 5 players from that team have either a.) moved to another league, b.) are playing a different sport, or c.) have signed up with another team. So, I told my son that the team, as he knew it, would not be playing this year. And after talking to the coach of what his new team would be, it looks like they will be in a similar situation as to what we had the past few years.

So...I asked him if he STILL wanted to play or not, knowing that he'd have to go through much of the same process as before and be put on a different team. (I think my wife was trying to drop some subtle hints about not doing that again.) I told him they might get run-ruled in every game and that he might only get one at-bat per game. And he turns to me (we were in the car) and says "Even if all of that happens...it can still be fun to play." Suddenly I found it a little hard to see.

So thank you to my son who showed me there's another option besides just "who wins and who loses" and "it's how you play the game". Sometimes it's just about being on a field with a bunch of other kids playing a game that you love.

Love it. No joke, I played on the equivalent of the bad news bears when I was younger and loves it.

We knew we sucked, but hanging out eating peanuts and seeds in the dugout was a great time.

I'll never forget the time Dustin actually caught a pop up in the outfield. We celebrated like we had just won the World Series (it was especially classics because we dog piled in the outfield and two runners tagged up and scored).

Playing on a bad team with the right group of kids, Parents, And a sense of humor is seriously fun.

The above made me laugh out loud!! I remember those days when I even loved to just practice!

Great story. Glad he gets it CSF. I wish him luck and hope he (and you) has a great experience again.

A big this for me CSF as well. You are a blessed Dad. Be mindful of the moments and take pictures. Wishing you all continued success by enjoying the journey!

In these times of excessive video gaming and childhood obesity, this is such a great thing. And who knows--this could be their breakout year. :thumb:

Kids are much better at keeping sports in perspective compared to their parents or adults.

Kids play because it is fun. All too often parents use their kids success in sports as some type of validation for their parenting skills.

This is a little off base, but my son had me proud as heck this weekend. My son does play sports and his confidence level is much higher than mine. While he can be a pain in the butt, I always tell my wife, "as long as he can be polite and respectful to others we'LL be alright". My son and I went to a local fish fry on Friday night. He went running ahead to go see his buddies, when i got into sight I saw him holding the door for an elderly couple. I heard him say " well if I was old is want someone to hold the door for me". I laughed and teared up at the same time. I preach holding doors and saying yes ma'am no ma'am etc. to see this play out with me not around made me prouder than can be explained. A little of topic but I believe can be applied to subject.
