Best Teams Not to Win A State Title

Featured Replies

You are dead on about Somerset. They also had some quality teams in the early 70's and were runners-up to a powerful Mayfield squad in '78. I have to think they have to be the premier program to never win despite having been in the running so many years with some great teams. BTW, the '82 squad was the best Jumper team I saw though the '83 and '84 teams get the pub because of Massey and Fletcher.:thumb:

The 1982 team was the best SHS team to not have won a state title. Not to take anything away from last year's team or 99, but there was more talent in the heyday when their enrollment was between 600-700 and the county did not play football.

I agree that the Briar Jumpers are the premier program to have never won a State Title.

^ I think that Boone County takes the cake, all of the cake.

With all of that said, plus considering that they have toiled away in Class AAAA for the entirety of its existence, I think Boone County has to be the best program never to win a state championship.
I don't know that Boone's presence in 4A makes that much of a difference in itself. It isn't like they're a smaller school playing up in class ... their enrollment mandates they're in the state's biggest class.
Little confused on this one. Manual got blown out in the finals: 28-0.

Was it the Championship game against Trinity? I remember looking at one of the seasons where Manual pretty much dominated every team until the championship game against Trinity. Manual had a lot of teams shut out that year. And so did Trinity. And (this is praise, be grateful) compared to the other teams Trinity played, Manual was hardly blown out.

Bell County? Dunno if they have ever won it all or not, but if they haven't they would have to be on the list.

Boyd County had some good teams in the past and was runner-up in the State twice and definetly should had beat Middlesboro in the Championship one year, so they would have to be included in this list.

How could I forget about the teams with Massey on them.

Yeah, Bell has won it before.

My reasoning is that they've always had to go through the best teams in the entire state to win a title. For instance some teams like Danville, Mayfield, Corbin, etc. (small schools) don't always have to beat great teams to win a title. Boone County always has to beat, if not the best, one of the top two or three teams in the entire Commonwealth regardless of class just to get there (St. Xavier, Trinity, Male; occasionally Clark County, Dunbar, Henry Clay, etc.)

Harrodsburg, as a 1A football team, back in the days of D. Johnson had their share of disapointments in State games.

Actually Boone County played Trinity closer that year.

St X, Trinity, and Highlands come to mind. Hopefully one day soon, these schools will exorcise the demons that have held them back for so long and will win a state championship at long last.

I certainly cannot wait until we finally get one.
