Best Teams Not to Win A State Title

Featured Replies

The thread title was ambiguous. It was taken to mean, after some deliberation, best programs however it still says teams and as such it can apply under the umbrella designation of teams as opposed to programs.

Um OK I still agree with you.:thumb:

I guess it goes without saying, but how about Trinity's best win ever over Male in '02? That Male team is easily right up there with Last years St. X team... no, I'd say they're above.

Male 02 was very good, but the Elder win that year is more impressive. That may never happen again.

You're thinking of 1994, and I agree with you (Male won 4A in '93). I bet Glaser would agree they beat a superior team.

Thanks for the correction. Was the 94 Male team the one that beat a good Ballard team 80 (Eighty) - 7? I'll never forget the CJ's headline.

CentreRocks, what was the CJ headline?

Good point.

It likely would've happened in 2005.

It was the '93 team and it was Eastern. Ballard was actually the only team to beat Male in '93, blemishing their otherwise perfect record. The 80-7 Eastern game was played at Maxwell Field. I remember that headline well. My sister was a senior at Male that year and they put a photo of that CJ headline in the yearbook.

The 1992 Cov. Cath team (12-1) was the best team I have personally ever seen that did not win a state championship. The 1989 Paducah Tilghman team was also very good, but fell short in the state game.

If the discussion is about individual teams then the '93 Danville team has to be right there. They took their 42 game winning streak into the AA semi-finals and were upset by one point in OT. The Ads that year were one of the greatest wishbone machines ever seen. They spanked the AAA runner-up (Lincoln County) and the AAAA runner-up (Shelby County) during the regular season. Oh, yeah the Ads went on to go unbeaten in '94 and win their third title out of four years.

It likely would've happened in 2005.

Didn't mean Elder per se, but rather the D-I Ohio State Champion.

Bishop David had some very talented teams in the 70s and a good head coach in Denny Nash. They probably should have won one.

My all-time vote would also go to Boone County.

The '94 Leslie Co. team fits on this list.
