Best Teams Not to Win A State Title

Featured Replies

My reasoning is that they've always had to go through the best teams in the entire state to win a title. For instance some teams like Danville, Mayfield, Corbin, etc. (small schools) don't always have to beat great teams to win a title. Boone County always has to beat, if not the best, one of the top two or three teams in the entire Commonwealth regardless of class just to get there (St. Xavier, Trinity, Male; occasionally Clark County, Dunbar, Henry Clay, etc.)
I understand your point, just don't agree with it. You're basically saying that Boone gets extra credit for being in 4A, the largest class, even though that is the class in which they have to play because of their large enrollment.

Heck, some teams have won state titles (Danville, Mayfield and probably even Highlands) while playing up.

Correct, Danville has won A AA and AAA championships.

I see what you're saying. Take away my 4A comment. Would you agree with me, though, that Boone is the best school not to win a state title?

I wouldn't necessarily disagree with the assessment that Boone is the best program to not win a state title, but I'm not sure it's a clear-cut choice.

The argument is VERY strong, but there are a few others with the same claim...

I believe it was around 1998 when Harrodsburg got robbed in overtime against Beechwood. If I got the year wrong, someone please correct me.

The 97 and 99 Lawrence County teams were unreal and in 97 they were defeated my Cinderella Bourbon Co. and in 99 were knocked off by nationally ranked Fort Thomas. Just seems like we are in the wrong class in the right years. :(

3 final 4's in the 90's + a couple of Regional Runner Up's.

Lawrence Co has had quite a few good teams but always aloud themselves to get into the way of going all the way. I remember going to watch the 2002 Regional Semi-Finals game against Bell Co. LC was loaded with Wright and West and no one gave Bell a chance but Bell. LC was cocky before the game and it showed during the game. I still remember Bell using their big fullback on that last drive of the game all the way down the field and winning the game 8-0.

LC lost too Mayfield by three one year in the final 4. The best defensive team they ever had lost to Pburg in the Regional Championship by turning the ball over 6 times (QB had a broken finger which didn't help). I think the team that lost to Bourbon blew a great chance (I think breaking Breathitts streak and Bourbon knocking off Lex Cath gave them a false sense of security and Persian was tough). Two GREAT LC teams got waxed Lorenzen's SR year and Guduli's SR year (bad timing). The team you speak of did miss a great chance as that is about as good of a 1/2 combo at QB/RB that has come out of Eastern KY. They also had a team with Barnett/Storts/Short that just didn't quite get to where they should have.

In that process they have beaten a lot of good programs around there... Ashland, Russell, Belfry, Pburg, Breathitt, Bell, Rockcastle etc. They have just fallen a little short of the carpet. The day it happens Louisa will explode!!! Heck they tore down the goal posts when they broke Breathitt's streak! That is the only time I know of that happening anywhere. I really don't know what would happen there if they won a championship!

The year they had Alexander they should have won it, but apparently they hadn't been informed of the forward pass rule.

Actually, they had Alexander for four years. His senior year, Boone was not the best team in AAAA. Trinity was as evidenced by their dominating performance in the finals.

In fact, you can make a strong arguement that Boone wasn't the best AAAA team in their district Alexander's senior year. But, they beat Campbell County twice thanks to some excellent coaching and their committment to letting the best player on the field RUN with the ball a lot.

Personally, I think Boone's best chance at a title came in 1992, when they lost 3-0 in the finals. Wasn't there a halfback pass play in the endzone, or some type of craziness?

I think they were clearly the best AAAA team in the state in 87, and that has to be among the biggest "blown chances" at a title ever. And in 88, I think they were as good as eventual champ Trinity, it came down to one drive to force overtime by an eventual NFL player, and then about four inches.

I would also tack on the "Shawn Alexander went there" and they still couldn't win it arguement.

1979, Iroquois lost to State Champ Butler. They had 4 or 5 kids that got football schlorships, had a great back in Chuck Coleman, QB went to Louisville and played tight end, LB went to Eastern Kentucky, and my wife attended Butler. I still hear about "Da Bears". Iroquois scored on the opening kickoff on a fumble and that was all they got. Very frustrating nite.

How about Male 1993? That may be X's best win ever.
